Jered Weaver

Tossing another gem tonight, after shutting down the Orioles last outing. So far in the bigs he's thrown 13 innings, given up 5 hits and 3 walks, and struck out 13. Welcome to my fantasy team, Jered.

Not a surprise that he's dominating, given what he showed in the minors and in college, and also the fact that he has a deceptive delivery that is going to be really tough for opposing batters the first time they see it.

I'd like to congratulate those who signed him to their fantasy teams before this outing.

I thought very, very strongly about it, but figured I'd wait and see how he did in his next start. Most people in my league follow the majors very closely but don't know as much about prospects, so I figured I'd be safe taking that approach.

I play in a very deep league w/ 17 teams and I seriously considered using my mid level waiver priority position on him. I held out and ended up dropping Olmedo Saenz (who I love but I don't want to kill myself trying to figure out when he's gonna play) with my waiver spot still intact.

There's gonna be lots of potential prospects coming up soon I need to get a beat on as well.

No surprise, the minute I pick him up on my fantasy team, he gives up a couple of runs. I have to admit, I'm a little concerned about the run support he'll receive, because the Angels' offense kinda sucks.

In expanded non 5x5 roto leagues (like the one I'm in that includes K/BB ratio), he will be a nice asset.

Even in 5x5, if he's good in 3 categories, that's a solid pitcher.

I waited all year to use my #1 waiver status. Some questioned why I waited for him, but I feel good about it now

i used mine on hamels.

i think he'll have more value for the rest of the year (once he gets off the DL..bleh).

weaver is likely to be sent down when colon returns, right? he'll end up taking his brother's place eventually, but there's still a bit of time before that happens.

Why? His brother has a 6.64 ERA. If he has another couple of solid starts, I don't know why they would send him down and keep throwing his crappy brother every five days.

because they paid jeff a lot of money and probably aren't going to want to kill what little confidence he might have left by replacing him with his little brother.

jered will be in the rotation eventually this year - i'm just not convinced he's a permanent fixture right now.

That contract was horrendous - paying a guy like that after he put up an ERA+ of 99 in two years with the Dodgers. So yes, they paid a league-average pitcher $8.5 million. I guess maybe didn't realize that Dodger Stadium is a pitcher's park... but then again, neither did the Rangers when they signed Chan Ho Park, and neither did the Dodgers when they signed Darren Dreifort.

But back on point - it's a one year deal. The AL West sucks, meaning that for as bad as they've played, the Angels are very much still in the race - especially if (or when) they start getting healthy. If Jeff continues to suck in his next couple of starts and Jered is cruising, I can't see them sticking with Jeff. Fans and players would be pissed off. I think if Jeff's confidence is going to be shattered by doing that, then you just write him off as a loss.

Bump because Colon is ready to come back to the big club, and Weaver just won his fourth game tonight. His numbers right now stand at:

26 1/3 IP, 16 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 22 K, 1.37 ERA (4-0)

I'm not sure how they can send him down. He's been lights out, and the Angels are less than 5 games out of first place in their division.

Damn, I was really enjoying the Angels being more disapointing of a team then the Cubs were. Misery loves company, but as the Red Sox and White Sox have shown us the last 2 years, the Cubs are the only miserable team.

Hamel's has already been back for a little while now; all he had was a shoulder strain.

Just to update this topic, the idiot Angels sent Jered down to the minors. In other news, his brother still has an ERA over 6, and still will be in the starting rotation. Oh well, I guess the Angels are already 7 games out and counting now... those idiots deserve what they get for farming out one of their better pitchers.

And then he proceeded to allow five runs (four earned) over five innings, including three home runs, in a start for Triple-A Salt Lake Sunday, June 18.
