Howry essentially replaced Farnsworth as the setup man. Both make similar money. Obviously, you don't want to three righty relievers (dempster, howry and farns) making $15 million.

Just throwing out a question. It's a little boring today. I remember a lot of people being ticked when Farns was dealt. Just wondering what the consensus is now. Does Hendry have the correct righty setup man now. Maybe he did something right for a change.

I agree with vance and abuck.

CubsfaninCA, I never remember you acting like this; I remember a time when I enjoyed your posts. But recently it seems your main goal is to be contradictory, and threads like this just add to that. Your posts are growing old.

How is this contradictory? This board endlessly discusses who should be in cf. Whether nomar should have been brought back. Whether declining to resign Alou was a good idea, etc., etc.

Seriously, what are you talking about with the title of this thread?

it's called trolling.

and yes, i'd rather have farnsworth than novoa, flowers, and moore.

so you'd pay farns, howry and dempster $15 million? that's what you're saying right?

i'm done connecting the dots for you after this one.

People missed Farnsworth because we didn't have anyone there, and because he was still relatively cheap for his production. This past offseason, and after Howry was signed, neither of those were true, and that's why there was no one pining for Farnsworth, and why your comparison makes no sense.

Did you seriously not see the difference between comparing decisions made in different offseasons and comparing decisions that were/weren't made in one offseason?

so howry's better for the money than farns.

if howry was stinking up the joint, i can guarantee there would be lots of pining for farns @ $5 million. hence the comparison makes sense. decisions made 2-3 years ago still effect this year.

Why? Farnsworth is paid approx $5M more than Novoa and his career numbers are only slightly better than Novoa's. I agree that this thread is pretty ridiculous, because nobody in their right mind would take Farnsworth over Howry, but Farnsworth is grossly overrated due to his upper 90'S heat. If Moore turns out to be a Major League player the Cubs got the best of that deal.

I think it is funny that this is considered trolling. If, for example, someone started a thread on a Cubs board saying "Who would you rather have now, CPatt or Pierre" that is classic trolling because it is just an attempt to rile up Cubs fans. However, the general attitude on this board is now so negative toward management that trying to bring up good things (yay - we now have upgraded our right handed relief corp) is viewed as trolling. Pretty wierd.

The decision to get rid of Patterson and acquire Pierre happened in the same offseason.

At the time of the deal, Farnsworth was under team control through '05. Since that decision only has a known impact through '05, it's pretty much irrelevent to compare it to a decision made this offseason. Furthermore, the way the thread was worded doesn't even imply this tenuous connection.

Farnsworth's upside is a lot higher than Howry's tho. Few guys can throw as hard as Farnsworth. It was always a matter of Farnsworth putting it together. It's quite debatable..

Hard to get much better than Howry and his mid 2era the past 3 years though.

Any contract Giles signed with us would've been for more than one year, so if you make that case now then it's still applicable then. The same doesn't apply to the situation you're falling back to. That's "critical thinking".

hendry could have signed farns to a long-term deal too instead of trading him..

people have recently brought up not having vlad or tejada. is farnsworth a taboo subject?

Situtations like the brawl are where I would like the Farns. Someone who can choke-slam you, and then be used as a goon the next time. The Farns would also be a good fit w/ Urlacher on the Bears defense.

haha, you're seriously not understanding/ignoring the entire point.

the point is you're trying to dig yourself out of the hole you dug several posts ago, and failing miserably.

if Corey Patterson becomes a perennial all star, how long are we going to hear about that? Trading Dontrelle Willis is still brought up here.

It was merely a hypothetical question that you misunderstood.
