Much has been made about our struggles at the plate this season. However, a great deal of the problem is also located in our starting staff. If Wood is ineffective and Prior doesnt return soon, no way we get this thing turned around. To wit:

Cub Starters are 12-20 with a 5.40 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP.

The ERA is 27th in the Majors only slightly ahead of Baltimore, KC, and Minny.

The WHIP is 24th ahead of Ariz, Minny, Fla, KC, Balt, and Pitt (1.66???).

Innings pitched by our starters is 28th in the league. Only Florida and KC starters have pitched fewer innings this season. Our guys are averaging 5 and 1/3rd innings. We keep that up much longer and our bullpen will die.

Our pen has been stellar, especially in May. 6-6-8 w/ 10 and a 3.83 ERA for the season.

For May:

Eyre 1.04

Ohman 1.86

Williamson 2.25

Howry 2.89

Novoa 3.38

Dempster 4.50

Z 1.50

Marshall 6.15

Wood 7.20

Maddux 7.48

Wood has started one game.

Guzman and Hill are the only other 2 that have started in May. They are both in AAA, so what is the point of putting their horrific #s up there?

Not attacking Kerry, just posting the ERA totals.

What?

Badger is my new buddy. He is just cracking wise on me because of a game day thread the other nite. I assailed ARam (pre-streak), which upset the sensibilities of those present because we all must follow blindly the opinions of the group and not have ideas of our own.

Cute.

Your claim that you were older so we should give you some arbitrary respect upset the sensibilities. But I got over it, and was in fact "cracking wise" with you today.

Did seem odd you would include Wood in those starters stats though.

It's almost as if Hendry's plan: Improve the bullpen, speed and defense, ignore starting pitching, OBP and SLG; isn't working out very well.

I completely agree with you. This team has improved in exactly the areas Hendry wanted to improve. it's just that those areas aren't required for a good baseball team.

Also, I'm extremely impressed with the punctuation of your sentence.

That can't be right, can it?

you missed a comma after the OBP, but everything else looked good. Extra bonus and style points for using a colon, semi-colon, multiple apostrophes, and multiple commas.

You were a hyphen short of the cycle.

The style guide says not to use a comma right before the "and" in a list.

Shouldn't it look like that? I didn't think that colons and semicolons could be used like Goony used them.

Ugh. Those numbers are terrible. I suspected they were bad but not Detroit Tigers bad. Ok, pre-2006 Detroit Tigers. Its a shame that the starting pitching and lack offense pretty much renders this kick ass bullpen worthless. IF they can get into the 7,8,9 innings losing by 1, tied or up by a run they have a good shot of winning a lot of games.

Hmmm i was always taught the opposite. And to be honest, it's now a petpeeve of mine when people don't put the comma in.

Prior+Wood starts and Cubs winning percent by year:

2002/52/.414

2003/62/.543

2004/43/.549

2005/37/.488

2004 is a bit of an anomaly thanks in part to some outstanding individual seasons (Z, ARam, Hollandsworth). Don't see many of those on the horizon in 2006.
