Even though we just got through a 7 game slide....we really lost very little ground in the race for the Central...thank God no one went on a run during that time...still...we've got a TON of issues...but if we could somehow solve them we're still within striking distance.

FYI, that was an 8 game slide. And the Cubs went from 3 games out to 6.5. And it was 10 of 11. They were 2 games back before then. Yes, they are still within striking distance and nobody has run off with the division yet. But that was some serious damage. There are now 8 teams ahead of them for the wild card. The Cubs have relied too long on the "it's early" claim. Last year they lost 8 straight early, and did it again 2 more times.

There's no reason to give up, but I think it's important to remember that these losses all count and hurt. They can't just expect things to get better, they have to proactively make things better.

I agree that they do need to make some changes. But a few guys that are vital to the teams success haven't been hitting to their career norms nor pitching either. I am mostly looking at Pierre/aram/Zambrano and to an extent Jones. We are seeing some signs of life, especially from Zambrano. I'm not making excuses and not saying they shouldn't find some help but to me this 8 game skid doesn't happen of some of the players were playing to their norms.

My bad on the 8 game slide...but I think the 10 out of 11 proves my point even more...the fact that we lost 10 of 11 and that only equated to 3.5 in the standings is pretty lucky on our part. Regardless. I completely agree, the only way any of it matters is if we go out and do something to make the offense better, Kerry, Mark, Wade...whoever, cannot pitch enough shutouts to compensate for the offense as it currently stands.

There is absolutely no point in looking at the standings. We've seen this movie before (2004, 2005). The end is just starting closer to the opening scene in 2006.

I'll continue to watch though. But then I rubberneck at car wrecks too.

With how the offense has looked, and we knew it was not going to be that good to begin with, I don't see much hope of catching anybody. The Cubs may only be 6.5 games back, or whatever it is but there are 4 teams in the division that are ahead them and many more in the wildcard. With how things stand now, in reality, this team doesn't stand a chance in H E double hockey sticks.

I just don't understand saying we are outta the race and its only the 2nd week of May. And I'm definitely not even thinking about a wild card race this early!

By no means am I saying we look good, or that we arent currently sucking it up big time.

Have you been watching the games and seen how bad this offense is? Unless Hendry makes some miraculous moves this team is going nowhere.

It's not the number of games back, or even how many teams are in front of them.

It's how this team is playing and how we expect the season to go based on past experience with this leadership group.

Getting Derek Lee back does not make up for all the deficiencies in this line-up. Getting Prior and Wood back does not do enough to recover from the continued stupid level of play by this team.

With apologies to Ron White, you can't fix stupid.
