2 bad starts and we are throwing him under the bus already.

it didnt help any that he was squeezed in the first innings and Pierre throws the ball over the cut off man.

Not throwing him under the bus YET, but he's been hit very hard his last two starts.

Personally, I was kinda hoping this was a "new and improved" Greg. A pitcher who wasn't going to pitch good-decent every other time out only to be destroyed in his other starts.

Granted it's only two games, but it's definately not encouraging.

I disagree. Five great starts and two poor starts is a very good ratio. If he keeps this pace up all year we'll all be happy.

Are you riding the same bus as me? Cause there is no way everyone here will be happy at the same time, other than a WS and even then someone will find fault in it.

That's not really the pace though. It's like when people were saying the team was still a game over .500, so you can't complain. Yeah, the overall record was "fine" but the trend was downward and it was plainly obvious. Greg has had 5 game stretches like he did to start the season in the past couple years. I want to hope that this won't be the same season, when he racks up the mediocre-to-bad starts almost as quickly as the good. He was great to start the season, but we knew it wouldn't last. The question was how much he'd decline. Right now it's looking like the answer is "quite a bit".

It's got to be tough getting up to pitch when you realize what kind of ballclub is behind you. I know he's a professional, but there's nobody helping him out there. Our pitchers go to the mound, and it might as well be the island in the TV show "Lost." No rescue in sight.

That's definitely got to be tough. But Greg is a pro, and I don't think he lets that affect him.

Yeesh. I had to go to sleep after the first inning last night (lucky me).

I wasn't surprised by the outcome of his start vs. Arizona -- they've always hit him well and I don't know if he's ever pitched well at Chase/BOB. I'm not so sure what happened last night.

Hopefully he adjusts soon. I'd like to add something positive about Z's last start and Wood coming back before too long ... but I can't work up the happy-joy energy to do so right now.

Maddux is 40 years old, I don't think we could realistically expect him to continue the dominance he had in his first 5 starts, which were amazing and a joy to watch. I think he will probably win 15-16 games and have an ERA near 4 when the season ends.

I'm hoping he can have a few more good starts to up his trade value. He could be our most valuable piece in the yard sale we're likely to have. Considering he's likely gone after this year, I'd like to get something for him from some contending team.

He'd have to waive his NTC right? You think he wants to move around at this point in his career?

I wasn't aware he has a NTC. My bad.

Maybe he doesn't. I thought he did though.

Well, now I'm really confused! Way to go!!!

He still has great movement on his pitches, although his location seemed to be off in yesterday's game. As long as he keeps the ball in the park he'll have a good year.

I thought he had one, but this said otherwise:

Greg Maddux p

3 years/$24M (2004-06)

04:$6M, 05:$9M, 06:$9M

club may void 2006 if Maddux does not post 400 IP 04-05

signed as a free agent 2/04

I thought so too, until I checked Cot's.

Ship him now while he still has some value, build for the future.

Well at least he's helping Marshall right now. I don't think it's a coincidence that Marhall is attached to his hip and is displaying a great deal of poise and craftiness on the mound. Obviously he has the stuff, but I think he's learning a great deal from Greg. I think once we get Prior back, we'll be able to move Maddog.

I could be wrong about this, but my recollection is that nothing was known or heard about the no-trade clause until around the time that he vested for the option year (which is this year). I *think* Bruce confirmed that Maddux had at least a limited no-trade clause, the details of which are unknown. It's also not know whether the NTC would apply during the option year.

I think it's possible that he could waive it (if it applies in the first place), but I'd think it would have to be for very specific circumstances.

Assuming we get our guys back, moving Maddux would give us the opportunity to give Hill and/or Guzman 'full' major league tryouts.

I'm not sure Hill needs much more ML tryouts. He needs a second pitch. Until he gets one, he's gonna suck.

Gooz though has the stuff. He just has no control. Once he can hone his location and control, he'll be VERY good.

OK, I'll rephrase. If he wins five of every seven decisions with an ERA of around 3.60, all REASONABLE people will be happy. Better? :D

It's funny how because his first five starts were gems, people raise H-E-double-hockey-sticks when he gets roughed up for two starts. If he had his normal year and then had these seven starts in August-September, it would be a different reaction.
