Hard luck for Kerry Wood in 2003:

4/23: 2 runs in 7 IP; gets the loss (Cubs are shut out)

5/10: 1 run in 7 IP; gets a ND (Cubs win game)

5/15: 0 runs in 7 IP (3 hits and 2 BB); gets a ND (Cubs win game)

5/25: 1 run in 7 IP (allows only 1 hit); gets the loss (Cubs are shut out)

8/11: 2 runs in 7 IP; gets the loss (Cubs score 1)

8/27: 0 runs in 7 IP; gets a ND (bullpen blows game)

9/2: 2 runs in 7 IP (1 earned); gets the loss (Cubs are shut out)

9/12: 1 run in 6 IP; gets a ND (bullpen blows lead; Cubs win game)

If he'd just gotten the win in 3 of these games (which certainly would seem reasonable), would people have quit ragging on him?

It's woody's fault. He should have gone longer than 7 IP with 2 runs or less.

You're right. I forgot that for each of his starts the teams' took a time machine back to 1914.

Prior probably isn't soft, but I think he may have Traumatophobia. It's the fear of being injured. I don't think it would hurt him to see a sports psychologist.

Didn't Steve Stone counsel for this those few years he wasn't announcing?

I don't know, but Steve Stone and I pretty much agree on everything he says about everything.

But a better pitcher, through sheer grit, determination, "craftiness," and mystical game-winning power would have found a way to win, don't you see?

craftiness, determination, a whip of under .90 and and era of 1.35. Oh that and earning his freakin salary by actually picking up a baseball on the day he is supposed and giving up some quality frames. Coach L

Not sure if you were being sarcastic -- are you suggesting Wood wasn't doing that in '03?

Dude he only won 14 games. He sucked.

Good intentions are like bad ops or defense. They dont count What has Wood done since 2000 freakin 3 and by the way i have an autographed Jersey and ball of KW. I love the man but he has not produced. Big Dog Maddux has taken the ball and kept us in more games than anyone in 2004 5 and 6 . Im tired of the injurys thats why Dusty gets to trot out 3 rookie starters and no DLee and some will still find a way to blame his butt. Coach L

People had problems with Dusty long before injuries. And Dusty may have played a significant part in some of these injuries. He can't be considered free of any blame for Prior and Wood.

Some people did not like Dusty, and there is no proven metric that says he caused injury to either one. Wood was a train wreck , well before dusty. Have a good one. Coach L

Wood and Prior were two of the most abused pitchers in 2003, and its likely their arms have suffered accordingly. I'm beginning to worry that Zambrano is next.

I love it when people argue that wins determine how good a pitcher is. Reminds me of my friend Pat that thinks Matt Morris and Russ Ortiz are better than Wood and Zambrano, among many others, based on wins alone.

He also thinks Matt Morris is a future hall of famer (maybe because he went to our high school  )

Yes, it's impossible to prove that any one outing or season causes an injury problem down the road. Overusing a pitcher may not bring about an injury immediately, and it may never cause an injury. But there is plenty of research to show that leaving a pitcher in past the point of fatigue does cause physical damage. A common estimate for the point of fatigue is about 100 pitches. For young starters, it's usually closer to 90 pitches.

It's a fact that Dusty had 3 of the top 12 pitchers in Pitcher Abuse Points in 2003. He left his starters in past the point of fatigue on a regular basis. We can argue over why he did it (he didn't have a good bullpen, etc), but the fact is, he rode his starters too long consistently.

Would Kerry Wood have gotten hurt anyway? Maybe. Would Mark Prior have gotten hurt? Maybe. But it would have been a lot less likely if Johnny B Baker weren't overextending them.
