Everyone drop the Neifi subject now.

Also, no criticizing of posters.

Thank you! I'm sick of the Neifi bashers.

It was meant to be a joke. I guess it wasn't funny.

And this thread had very little to say about Neifi until people came on whining about how much people complain about Neifi.

This is flat-out wrong. Read the first 5 pages of the thread again.

Pre-emptive and usually wrong? Um, maybe you didn't notice, but Dusty's first choice was to insert Neifi into the lineup. He's used Neifi as his go to guy before in tight spots, and clearly has an affinity for Neifi. Anybody expressing concern about Neifi getting more playing time due to this is absolutely justified.

How many games has Neifi started in favor of Walker and Cedeno this year? Before the season started, multiple people on this board guanranteed Neifi would be higher on the depth chart than those two and would get more at bats than either even if/when all are fully healthy, and that Hairston never had a chance to start over Neifi.

They were wrong. Dusty's first choice this year has not been to insert Neifi into lineups - unless you're talking about last night, in which case, as a late inning defensive replacement - he was the correct choice. Neifi hasn't been the first bench option. It seems to me that the Neifi-hate is a comfort blanket for people anytime something on this team goes wrong.

How many games has Neifi started since Lee was injured? Zero, yeah? So that makes the Neifi concerns pre-emptive. Can't people at least cry after Neifi starts, if that is even the case (which is unlikely anyway)?

I'll throw a log on the Neifi fire and admit I may have been wrong about how Dusty will use Neifi this season, although it's a little early to be sure. I'll also say it's pretty pathetic that it's taken 3+ years for Dusty to surprise his critics by deviating from his predictable trademark idiocies. If I have to wait another 3 years for that to happen again then I want a new manager.

Back to the Lee discussion now.

I don't understand the Neifi hate. My guess it is his misuse last year in the 2 spot in the order, which is Baker's doing - not Neifi's.

Take last night for example. As stated, a great defensive stop that saved us a run late in a tight game, and a big hit.

I'll take Neifi Perez. I won't be unhappy at seeing him playing some 2B with Walker at 1B until DLee gets back.

NO BODY HATES NEIFI

NO BODY HATES NEIFI

NO BODY HATES NEIFI

What people are upset about is the way he has been/is used by Baker.

Hitting him high in the order

Giving him playing time over Cedeno (before he got hurt) last year when the Cubs were out of it.

And Jim Hendry giving him ridiculous money to be a back up.

Over the course of a season he has very little value, even as a late inning replacement.

He is not a competent fill in for a long period of time.

Cheers to you. Here's hoping Dusty continues making solid game lineup decisions this season.

In the end, I have no issues with dogging Dusty for placing Neifi in the two-hole last year and denying Cedeno at bats in the middle of the season. These are accurate and legitimate complaints. I'm on that bad decisions wagon.

But Dusty hasn't used Neifi that way this year. Walker and Cedeno have the large majority of starts at 2B and SS respectively. Hairston and Perez have spot starts. So it seems premature for anybody to think that an injury to the starting 1B will result in the 3rd-depth-chart-2B/2nd-depth-SS suddenly gettng all the starts over the guys in front of him.

BTW - I was very stunned to get back from lunch and find a thread started in my name. It wasn't my intention to start a new thread, but the split makes sense as it's only tangentially related.

You were the first obvious Neifi post from when the discussion in the other thread shifted, that's why you started the thread.

Note to True Cub fans:

Don't let the pessimists & trolls on this board sway you into the Dusty & Neifi, etc. hate. The fact is he is one of the best back-up SS's in the game. He was never signed by the Cubs to be anything else. Another fact that remains is that it's only a 25 man roster & each team plays 162 games in limited days. Therefore, when people B&C complain constantly, whenever Neifi get PT, the TBCF's that choose to root for ALL Cub players by all means are going to take offense to those who troll & hate.

when you say neifi sucks it may not be hate but it certainly isn't saying "i don't like the way dusty uses him".

he does not suck at what he does. he is a back up. look around the league and tell me he is not one of the better utility/back up guys. he had a good(for him) year last year. the problem was that he had to play all the time and that dusty put him where he didn't belong. if dlee is going to be out a short time then we can make due with mabry, neifi, hairston and walker filling in. if he is out for some time we better look to make a move or bring up a bat. we can not go vey far with barrett and jones batting cleanup!

Kind of hypocritical given what you said about Corey last year.

Please don't label other posters as pessimists and trolls.

Nobody hates Neifi. Sure there are jokes made at his expense, but as others have mentioned, that has more to do with the way he was used by Dusty last year. Make no mistake, Neifi is a not a good offensive player, but to mollify some of you out there I'll say a few kind things about him.

1 ) He's genuinely a fine fielding middle infielder.

2 ) By all accounts, he appears to be a popular teammate.

3 ) He's taken Ronny Cedeno under his wing. I don't see this as a bad thing.

4 ) If the Cubs had made the playoffs in 2004, Neifi would have gone down in lore as a Cub hero. It was Neifi's outstanding play that more than made up for the loss of Nomar.

5 ) He filled in admirably for the first couple months of the season when Nomar went down (hmm, I'm sensing a pattern).

6 ) He's a better player than Jose Macias.

7 ) He's a better hitter than Rey Ordonez.

8 ) He's a better fielder than Todd Walker.

9 ) He's got a more reliable arm than Ronny Cedeno.

10 ) He's got a great name: Neifi Neftali Perez.

11 ) I'll never forget that grand slam he hit against St. Louis.

You know he meant 2004.

Or more likely, 2005.
