Are you sure he's already been extended? The bottom line on ESPN 2 just quoted the suntimes article saying the Cubs plan on extending Hendry's contract, making an announcement maybe as soon as Thursday.

Here's the Suntimes article:

Suntimes

CINCINNATI -- The Cubs are expected to sign general manager Jim Hendry to a contract extension Thursday, the day before the team's home opener against the St. Louis Cardinals.

A Cubs source said Monday that team president Andy MacPhail will begin negotiations with Hendry today. Hendry, who is signed through 2006, succeeded MacPhail as general manager on July 5, 2002, after manager Don Baylor was fired.

Hmmm...I just got a glance as it as I was reading something here, I thought it said they signed him, sorry if I misread.

No problem. It sounds like it's all but a done deal anyway. The bigger questions are will Hendry try to re-sign Baker, and will Baker accept if he's offered.

Unfortunately, I think he will offer him an extension.

Please don't do that to me, Jim. Please.

I am happy to have Jim back for a few more. However, I certainly hope that he makes Dusty earn an extension by showing us something this year.

Well, if Hendry wants Dusty back, the best thing he could do is wait to see if the team has a great year, then extend him. He could say he was forced to extend him because of the season like Angelo did with Jauron and extend his career with the team at least one more manager.

I think we agree here - if the team wins 95 games and goes to the playoffs, I would accept extending Dusty.

IMO the only question is: Does Baker want to be back?

If he does, Hendry will give him an extension.

Jim and Dusty are two peas in a pod.

Where are the Hendry Haters???

Seriously, they should have got this done after the 2005 season.... and dare I say resign dusty as well.... The manager market was thinned... I dont see a viable canidate... Maybe Bobby Valentine?? ahh...

I'm a Hendry detractor, not hater. My feelings about Baker are a little stronger.

I think it would have been incredibly irresponsible and foolish to sign a deal following the 2005 season. They certainly haven't earned any sort of extension.

I don't see the point of waiting all offseason and spring, then extending him in the first week of the season. Make them both earn an extension instead of praising them for not being as bad as previous management types.

It's only thin if you want a big name.

It's probably much easier to find someone who will not make the same mistakes as Hendry to replace him, than it would be to find someone like that in Dusty's case. Extending him is a bad idea IMO, he has done very little to inspire confidence since the Nomar deal, with the bad definitely outweighing the good.

The Trib guys will regret this when they realize Hendry has saddled the payroll with a bunch of unwise and expensive multi-year committments.

I don't know about that. The Cubs have a very low committment 2-3 years down the road. They shouldn't be guaranteeing anything to Perez, Rusch or Jones beyond this year. And he went a bit long on the middle relief. But he has much bigger faults than "saddling the payroll" with bad contracts.

You mean like saddling the 25 man roster with mediocre talent, thinning a farm system that he had previously worked so hard to build, etc.?

Yeah, like that stuff.

Perez, Rusch, Eyre, Howry, Jones, Dempster. These guys add up to a sizable chunk of payroll and I don't think any of them are worth it. Dempster might be, but I don't see how his track record justified his contract. I do agree with Tim though, the amount of roster space these guys take up might actually be more annoying than their salaries. Hard call there.

I can't complain about Dempster's contract. And when you look at committments around the league 2-3 years from now, the Cubs are among the lowest of any team (not counting the extremely low payroll teams). This just isn't among his worst sins. They have lots of freedom of movement in the next couple years. The problem is lack of great talent locked-up, as opposed to too much mediocrity taking up money.
