Just for fun I looked at Eyre's game logs going back through 2003 to see if he had thrown 37 or more pitches in a game. He hadn't. I'm not saying he can't handle it, I just thought it was funny that he set a mark like this in the opening day of his first season with Dusty Baker. I did see he threw 36 a few times, so I guess it's okay for him to do this occasionally.

Yeah, I was a bit suprised on how many pitches he threw. However, he did bail the Cubs out on that one bases loaded situation, with zero outs, if I am not mistaken, only giving up one run.

Cubs pitchers are playing with fire, there has been like several of those bases loaded, with 0 or 1 outs, only to surrender just one run, or what I saw anyways.

It'll be interesting to see if Dusty makes a habit of this. He has a history of becoming temporarily infatuated with particular relievers and using them constantly.

If you cannot throw back to back days as a middle reliever, you better go find a new job.

Are you joking? Thirty-seven pitches for a middle releiver is like 100 pitchers for a starter. They have a completely different approach to pitching.

However, the Cubs have an off day tomorrow so the point is moot.

I would be very suprised if Z doesn't pull it together soon and start putting out 7+ innings regularly.

He did this last year too. Z will settle in, and Eyre can kick his feet back and watch the fun 8)

Why pitch him the 7th with a 6 run lead?I doubt he pitched 2 innings much last year.86 games 68 innings.Hes more of a lefty setup man than a middle reliever.

I honestly had no problems with Baker bringing in Eyre and felt he did a pretty good job of managing the game. I just didn't like the fact that he left Eyre in there for too long.

After all 8 of those innings over the course of 11 games?

he pitched in 8/10 games, then after a break in 3/4 -> injury. seems a bit excessive for a guy coming off an injury.

Is Dusty really oblivious to the damage he does to his pitchers?Or is it Dick Pole and Rothschild advising him?

What is the evidence for Dusty damaging his pitchers on a regular basis?

I'm not saying there isn't any, I just don't know what it is.
