Where is all the love for Pena coming from? He's a poor mans Adam Dunn without the OBP.

I might be way off on my impression of Pena, but I see a young Sammy Sosa without the speed. He just turned 24. He's never had more than a half season of at bats, yet he's had as many as 26 HR's in a season.

A guy with that kind of power can K all he wants if he can hit 40+ HR's a year. Sammy had a horrible OBP when he was that age also.

Yeah that .254/.304/.492 is great from Willy Mo in right. Not to mention his 120 strikeouts to 20 walks. Corey Patterson will probably outproduce Pena this year. And Nixon's numbers are on a steady decline, plus he's injury prone.

It's called a platoon slick. No matter how you cut it, Boston's RF is much better than Jones. Their offense runs circles around the Cubs. Any comparison is absolutely absurd.

Well that's good, since I never compared the two offenses. Nor did I compare their RF to Jones. I just said they have major holes in their offense as well. I'm just not as sold on their RF situation as you are.

I disagree with that last statement. 200 k's and 40 walks would be pretty awful. I don't care how many HR's you hit. Especially if he's only going to hit around .250 for average.

You can all call me crazy if you want too but I would have gone with Nomar at SS with Ceeno backing him up.

I would to. Maybe I didn't phrase it properly. My offense would have probably kept Nomar at SS unless Cedeno was the real deal and Murton faltered.

Nomar was done as an everyday SS. That's the scouts consensus opinion around MLB.

He wasn't a stud defender to begin with and his latest injury really hurt his defensive abilities.

Why would Nomar sign here to back up Cedeno and maybe play OF when he could start everyday in LA in an understood role as the everyday 1B?

I phrased my response incorrectly. Nomar would have been my starter somewhere in the Cubs line up, whether it be SS or an outfield spot.

Nomar wanted to come back and play for the Cubs in '06. He commented that he was willing to play different positions and wanted to do Chicago right for being hurt the last few years. He loved it here and wanted to return. If the Cubs showed any interest in him, LA never would have been an option. But, the Cubs held hands with Furcal until he signed in LA. LA ended up with Furcal AND Nomar. How do you like them apples.

I've been very upset with this offseason. I hope Cedeno works out. I'm excited that he's getting his chance. But, I want Dusty and Hendry gone if Neifi is playing SS everyday too prematurely.

When you have the OBP guys that Boston has, you can afford to have a guy like Pena in your line up. Once again, I must point out his age. He was 23 when he put up those numbers. Sammy Sosa had numbers just as bad minus the power when he was 23.

The one big difference between Sammy and Willy Mo is, this is 2006 and not 1996. Pena probably won't get the same type of help that Sammy had. But I do see your comparison between the two. I just wouldn't want Pena anywhere near this team.

All this said...why the title of this thread?

Did I miss something or isn't Cedeno still the starter for now?

The title was supposed to be "over Cedeno's shoulder", which I was allowed to enter. It truncated on submission, which is somewhat annoying, but I suppose I should have made the title more concise.

With the way the Cubs set up this team, I agree. Pena would not be a good fit. Now, put .370+ OBP in the top 5 spots in the order, and I'll take a guy like Pena hitting 6th. I think the Cubs could afford to do it then.

We don't really know what kind of an effect steroids had on Sosa, so it's not really fair to assume he couldn't have improved on his own as he aged. A lot of players improve their OBP. Sammy K'd a lot when he was young, and he K'd a lot as he was older. What did improve was his walk rate, which was probably a combination of pitchers pitching around him and a little more selectivity on his part.

Worst manager in the bigs.

Period.

And you are an idiot.

PERIOD!

I will absolutely NOT blame Dusty Baker for this if it happens. That man gave all the opportunities in the world to Ronny Cedeno. He fricking GAVE him the job outright, and told him to relax. What does Ronny do? He lays eggs at the plate and commits 4 errors in the field in the spring! He doesn't deserve the job if he's going to commit errors like that.

I want Ronny to succeed badly. Awesome skills, and a lot of potential. But I want to win too.

And let's just get this straight now.

NEIFI. PEREZ. IS. NOT. THAT. BAD!

Now shut up and learn a little bit about baseball.

Neifi Perez is bad. Telling the guy he has the job and actually giving him a chance to fail in the major league season are very different things. Laying eggs in the spring and making some errors should not lose somebody their job.

And calling that person an idiot was completely uncalled for.

So, do the runs that score on the 40 homers count less because he struck out on other plays?

The .250 average and the 40 walks are much larger concerns than the strikeouts in that scenario.

No, as far as I know the runs would count the same.

That made me laugh for some reason.

I feel bad for saying this since the guy is new, but I haven't seen Modzilla for a while and was hoping for a cameo appearance.

Haha, anyone that knows me knows that I've made more impressions than the Hollywood walk of fame. That's far from a first impression.

But I do respect your wishes and will tone it down even more.
