Right after I posted it, I looked under this topic and say it was here. I didn't want to be posting the same thing over and over again.

So I deleted it - sorry.

This is going to be an interesting few days to see what goes down.

Why did you guys take Huggins and Majerus off the list and put Alford on it?

Apparently they are committed to having someone who will for sure run a clean program. Majerus and (especially) Huggins don't fit that criteria.

Wasn't Majerus' health a big concern as well?

Probably, NCAA past is the big reason I heard though.

Another scoop is that Alford called Missouri like a week ago before their game against Northwestern State or maybe even a few days before the Big Ten tournament.

He did make the call and told Missouri he is interested in the job.

That's going to be crazy - him coaching against Coach Knight again.

Where is anyone "scooping that"?

They contacted him to gauge his interest and he told them (probably indirectly) he would be interested. They then asked for Bowlsby's permission and he granted that.

I really don't remember Majerus being under NCAA investigations but apparently he was.

I don't remember in detail, but I think it had to do with (no joke) him or someone in the program buying players meals.

Ah, now that you mention it I think you're right. I guess I would think maybe that's being overblown when they mention that both he and Huggins have been investigated. Majerus always seemed to run a clean program to me and is much cleaner than Huggy bear.

If it was just about coaching, I would love Majerus. He's just a great coach. But he's also a pretty strange guy and lived in a hotel for most, if not all of his stay in Utah.

Still if his health were in order (he's supposedly dropped 40-50 pounds) I would be interested.

Good for McDermott. Please let Altman go to Iowa, he's on the short list of coaches I don't want to see at Mizzou.

What is your list of coaches that you want at Mizzou?

Anderson, Hobbs, Beilein, and Majerus would all be good hires IMO. Apparently Huggins is the hot name around, but I'm not a big fan. Dixon from Pitt has come up and would be a great hire, but I'm not convinced that his low salary(the only reason he'd leave Pitt) is enough for him to come to a situation like Mizzou.

Heard the UNFORTUNATE rumors about Mizzou interviewing Steve Alford. If they hire him, I'm not going to another Mizzou basketball game in my two years left here.

Posted
Why would you never go to a game if Alford is coach?

That seems a bit extreme. I'll be pretty disappointed if Alford gets hired, but after that he's our coach and I need to support him and what's left of the team.

In related news, Thomas Gardner declared for the draft but didn't hire an agent. I really doubt he stays in, or he'll probably be NBDL bound.

Yeah I can understand being upset and not having him at the top of your list, but geez. The guy runs a clean program and has done a lot to disspell the arrogant image he had early on here.

I actually think he can do pretty well at MU. He's learned from a lot of his mistakes, will have a fresh start and a solid recruiting base. He'll have the facilities and funds needed to get the job done.

There are rumors flying that if he took the Mizzou job, Buzz Peterson would come on board to be his associate head coach. I'm really not sure where that came from and would assume it means that Craig Neal is planning on taking a head job somewhere.

If Alford and Buzz come to MU it's almost a guarantee that you would land Tyler Smith (6'7 inside-outside wing) who is a top 50 recruit. He committed to Buzz at Tennessee but then after he was fired he decided he didn't want to go there anymore and Bruce Pearl refused to let him out of his LOI. Thus he was forced to go to prep school this year where people think he improved even more.

Iowa is a finalist for him with Pitt, Memphis and Kentucky. He really liked Alford and UK fans felt that if Alford stayed at Iowa, Smith would be coming.

By the way is this hiring pretty much all on Alden's plate or is there some kind of search committee?

There's a committee, a torn one at that. Apparently, all except Alden(and by extension, the higher ups at the University) were in favor of going after Huggins, or at least that's the rumor. I can't remember who all is on the committee, pretty sure Link the radio announcer(the guy involved with the Snyder resignation fiasco) as well as Jon Sundvold are both a part of it. Norm Stewart is not on the committee.

My reasons are

1. I've always pretty much hated Alford. Maybe its arrogance or just the way he seem son tv, I've never liked him.

2. the way he handled the Pierre Pierce situation really made me dislike him as a person. Sure Mizzou has probably done stupid crap like that too, but to make an exception for Pierce made me angry.

3. There has got to be better coaches out there for the taking. Alford's resume to me is not impressive. First round losses in the NCAA tournament just aren't really exciting.

4. There's got to be better recruiting coaches out there.

5. Alden willl have passed over or just received no thanks replies from other coaches. If Alford is the best Alden can do, he should be fired. I hope if Mizzou hires Alford, K-State hires Huggins and he continually beats down Mizzou.

6. I'm an Illinois fan first, and I think most Iowa fans know that Illinois and Iowa fans don't get along very well. That probably has some to do with my disliking of Alford, as well.

I know the Mizzou job isn't all that attractive right now, but I think Mizzou is still selling itself short if they hire him. Good facilities, brand new basketball arena, a fanbase DYING to be good. Come on Alden, make the right choice.

Iowa should be praying that he leaves for Mizzou, this year is gonna be tough for them anyways so they might as well start a new. I just wonder who would take the Iowa job right now. I thought McDermott would make the most sense. I wonder if Altman even sees Iowa as a step up at this point. I mean Creighton is in the tourny every year and would have been this year if it hadn't lost its best player.

Altman seems the most likely to me. He and Bowlsby have been rumored to have a mutual admiration for 5 years now.

No doubt he can coach, I just wonder if they want a younger guy who they don't have to worry about retirement soon. Although thye would be getting a sure thing with Dana.

A friend in the athletic dept at KSU today called me and Huggy is interviewing today! If we hire him, this is HUGE for KSU!

Agreed! I just know that with the money we are saving on Prince, we'll spend on a PROVEN BBALL coach. The fans are sick of being mediocre! I think we get Huggy!

In other news, Tigerboard is just outta control right now. People are just frantic and depressed. I'm gonna hope that Alden makes the right decision in this. Being relatively new to Mizzou (fan for basically three years), I don't know much about Alden, other than the Mizzou fans generally hate him.

What a soap opera this has turned into.

There are a lot of conspiracy theories flying around right now. The most common one is that Bowlsby and Alford used this Mizzou interest to force Indiana's hand one way or the other.

I'm betting

Huggy to KSU

Altman to Mizzou...

Tiger you have to look deeper at it than just his K-State stint though. First of all that's not the easiest place to succeed under normal circumstances.

I don't think it's that much harder to build a success at KState. Remember, they had a very solid program for a while, including 4 or 5 final fours. The've been down for the last 15-20 years or so...ever since Kruger left. Yeah, it's ion the boons, but a lot of schools are. If they get Huggy, they'll be good again.

I hope Mizzou passes on Alford. but with the state of that program, it might be hard to lure the best coaches there. Still, that should be a top 30 gig, IMO. It's the only high-major school in a state with two decent sized urban areas. Good acadmeically. New facilities. Decent college town. There's no reason they shouldn't have a strong program. They ought to fire Alden and let someone with a brain do the hiring.
