Ryan Theriot: Your starting shortstop?

I am REALLY impressed with this kid. If Cedeno doesn't pick it up, I'm not so sure we're stuck with Neifi. Is it possible the Cubs would give Theriot a chance to win the job? Because in spring training so far, he's been the best of the middle infielders.

 

I'm liking the idea of Hairston and Theriot as a double play combo quite a bit. Defense, speed, hustle, OBP. What's not to like? You still have Neifi as backup if needed.

 

And let's not turn this into a Walker thread, that's a different argument and discussion. An assumption of this thread is that Walker is gone.

I hope Dusty doesn't base the decision at shortstop based off of spring training. Cedeno proved himself in spring training and AAA last year, and winter ball this offseason, which should be more important than a few good weeks by Theriot.

 

Spring training often doesn't showcase true talent. Our last shortstop who had a great spring training came out with a pretty awful regular season before tearing his groin.

I wouldn't have minded seeing Theriot earn the middle infield utility role. However, Neifi is blocking him for the next 2 years.

 

If Walker is assumed to be gone, then I would imagine Theriot could earn the last spot on the roster if what we got in return for Walker wasn't another middle infielder.

Yep, his 19 AB's for the big league club last year is his only experience above AA.

Did anyone notice that, at least according to the box score, Theriot played RF the other day? It was probably a mistake but if it were true he'd have a much better chance of making the team.

Yup. Pie called for the ball on the run and Theriot backed up into his path. Good thing Pie pealed off and slowed up before hitting the fence. I wanted to throttle Theriot at that moment.

A little trivia - Theriot scored the winning run when LSU won the College World Series in, I believe it was 2000. He has experience and has improved every year. Solid.
