i ran into Thomas Atlee, a pitcher in the cubs minor league system, here in houston during the off-season. I was wondering if ya'll think he will have a chance to play in iowa this year or have the possibility of getting called up after the all-star break? How has he performed so far since being drafted?

thanks

Don't know much about him other than this data.

Looks to be too old to consider a real prospect. He's had rather inimpressive peripheral numbers in limited professional action since the draft (less than 100 IP in 4 years - missed 2003 season). No idea where he'll pitch this year, though he could probably fill a spot in the Iowa bullpen if they have the need.

Atlee will turn 27 this season and has only had 137 IP'd in his career. He has poor strikeout numbers which generally imply low-average stuff. I feel that he will be cut by Iowa before the season starts, and will only make the team if 3-4 pitchers are hurt or slow to get ready for the season (trades could also play a small part). Being hurt for all of 2003 didn't help his chances.

Injuries will dictate how soon he'll make the Iowa roster, but if it's anything like last year, it might not be all that long.

But when I think Atlee, I only think one thing: tree trunk legs.

I've seen this guy toss. Nasty fastball and slider. His mentality is out of sight; owns the plate and will brush hitters back. He did sit out the entire 03 season and has had average stats, but believe me, he has what it takes to play at a higher level. I plan on seeing him pitch some games against Round Rock.

Welcome. Thanks for the info. I was pretty sure Atlee had pretty solid stuff once he moved to full-time closer duty. He was underwhelming as a starter, though.
