They took him to a hospital in Mesa. No word yet.

It looked pretty bad. I can remember him staying down for what seemed like ages, and then he got to his knees.

I think eventually he walked off the field under his own power.

I bet Greenberg was wincing when he saw that.

That was my first image when I saw Hairston got plunked in the head, that brought flashbacks of Greenberg's beaning on the head.

Scary stuff. Just hope Hairston is all right.

I was out to eat earlier for lunch and noticed that the cubs game was on over near the bar. So I walked over to feast my eyes on the game and the first pitch I see, no kidding, two seconds after I started watching the game.. bam, Hairston nailed in the head. Just my luck. Two seconds into watching my first Cubs game of the year and a player is already in the dirt face down not moving.

All my best to Jerry. I was quite worried after he got hit and while he was down but he seemed to get up alright and not be in that bad of shape. If it weren't for those hefty new Cubs helmets, it could have been a lot worse. Just thankful it caught the middle back part of his helmet, and not his head, or face for that matter.

I can relate. One of the first few Cub games I got to catch on TV last year was the one where Nomar went down. Same thing as you: first thing I saw when I turned on the TV was him hit the DP ball, then go down in a heap  (maybe we shouldn't watch the games on tv anymore)

I hope Jerry is ok -- glad to hear he was up and moving around. Head beanings can play with your mind, so more than anything I hope he's emotionally ok.

You might be on to something here. The helmet Sosa was wearing when he was beaned shattered.

The Cubs initially announced Hairston was taken to Mesa Lutheran Hospital for a precautionary CAT scan, but trainer Mark O'Neal said Hairston went to Mesa Banner Hospital. O'Neal said Hairston showed none of the common symptoms of head injuries, such as nausea, dizziness or a ringing in the ears. And he was conscious when the trainer arrived at the plate.

"He had no symptoms of head injuries when he left here,'' O'Neal said.

I hope you are proud of yourself.

According to Mark O'Neal in an article by Bruce Miles, Hairston is ok.

Link.

Results of the CT scan weren’t immediately available, but team trainer Mark O’Neal provided a positive prognosis.

“He was completely conscious when we got out there,” O’Neal said. “We came in and evaluated him here in the clubhouse. Both of our docs were in here and looked at him.

“He had literally no symptoms whatsoever of head injuries when he left here. We’re anticipating good results.”

O’Neal said the CT scan was done to rule out serious injury because “many things can happen with head injuries.” The trainer said Hairston had no nausea, dizziness or ringing of the ears.

I think he'll be back on the field sometime this week. I wonder if those new helmets made a difference when it came to that impact. I know it was that new helmet, but I don't know if it did make any difference.

Thoughts?

Could have been that the same hit done to the old helmet would have shattered it like Sammy's. Impossible to say really. However, it was a hard fastball that smacked him, not like a weaker pitch. He got smacked good, so it may have broken under the old helmet.

"They said, 'Where are you? Who are you?' I said I was Derrek Lee," Hairston said. "It hurt a little bit but I knew I'd be OK."

 Get well soon, Jerry.

Even if Walker gets dealt, Hairston is solid. The guy finally gets 100% healthy and takes a fastball to the noggin. :(

I'll bet you Lee laughs his arse off when he hears that story.

I was just concerned about Hairston's wife and kids. (He has a new baby, right?)
