Has anybody read this book?

It came highly recommended to me by a friend as the first publication he has read that puts legitimate qualification on defensive stats.

As a huge fan of the impact of defense on the game, I was curious if anybody around here has read the book.

I have heard of it, and a guy on cardstalk did kind of a review of it. According to the book Lee is very average over the last 3 years he is actually right behind Darrly Ward for 1st baseman. While Pujols is 3rd for 1st baseman over the last 3 years.

Any defensive system that has Derrek Lee behind an uncoordinated blob like Daryle Ward loses all credibility and should be laughed at by all baseball fans.

Gammons discussed it in his article. I read about where Lee fell in regard to his defensive metrics.

I'm eager to read the book, but I'm already behind on my readings. It will probably have to wait until this summer.

I'm very curious to see how he dealt with 1B, as it is a completely different defensive problem compared to 2B, SS, and 3B. You don't just take the plays off the bat. It's going to be nigh impossible to be accurate judging vector, distance, and accuracy of throw from the other infielders to 1B by watching video (which is how they got their data). Since this is the means by which 1B touches the ball the most, the inaccuracy that comes into the evaluation is going to be fairly high.

True. And from my understanding, the book made no evaluations of catchers either.

Speaking of baseball books people have heard of, has anyone heard of "The Graphical Pitcher" by John Burnson? Amazon recommended it to me so I ordered it with the two prospect books. Here's the description:

Amazon[/url]"]The Graphical Pitcher is a new way to view baseball-pitching statistics. Instead of columns of numbers, the statistics are presented in the most natural and immediate wayvisually! The book devotes a full third of a page to each pitcher, describing his career in six multi-faceted graphs and charts. These include a seasonal log and look at statistical rates, workload, career trends, and a revolutionary depiction of the data using a Monte Carlo simulation.

Yeah the guy on CardsTalk mentioned that it didnt do catchers. I have to agree with Z38 though any defensive evaluation that puts Lee behind Ward loses a little in my eyes. Anyone who has watched baseball should be able to tell the Lee is 100 times better a defensive player then Ward.

Anyone who has watched baseball should be able to tell you Jeter is a great defensive shortstop.

Anyone who has watched baseball should be able to tell small ball works.

Anyone who has watched baseball should be able to tell certain players are clutch.

I’m very skeptical but I’ll keep an open mind. :D
