I don't remember reading any blatant lies, but it is certainly possible that I missed some. Can you be more specific?

He's probably talking about Dusty's "nothing hurts. nothing, nothing, nothing"

Was that a lie or did Baker think the discomfort was normal Spring Training soreness? I think it was the latter.

I think you're right. But I'm pretty sure that's the quote the previous poster was so steamed up about. I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt here.

Thanks for the benefit of the doubt, friend, and yes, the Dusty quote was one of the "blatant lies" I was referring to. The other was from GM Jim Hendry, who said something like, "This is the first we've heard Prior was hurt."

I'm not saying you shouldn't be mad if you want to be. Be as mad as you want at the Cubs.

But how do you know that what Hendry said was a "blatant lie"? Who's to say that no one knew he had anything other than soreness until a couple of days ago? You enjoyed having the benefit of the doubt afforded to you...

..and there was also this from the original Will Carroll article, which brings Larry Rothschild into the mix:

You can't have spring training anymore without pitcher problems or at least rumors of said problems. Those usually start with the Cubs, and this year is no different. Reliable sources--the same ones that tipped us early to Mark Prior's Achilles problem--now tell us that Prior is having shoulder problems. The Cubs deny this and point to Prior's work on the mound. Prior was doing towel drills on Saturday, but this is the same type of work he was doing last year when there was a problem. According to our best sources in Mesa, Prior looks "weak and sick." Until he throws, we just won't know, though I'd like to believe Larry Rothschild.

Are these yet more blatant lies? Or, as Prior said, are the conspiracy theorists simply looking at things from the negative side only?

ChicagoSports.com[/url]"]Not only was Mark Prior stunned at the suddenness of shoulder pain, he remains baffled at those who claim to know he was injured coming into spring training.

"I had been feeling good all spring," Prior said Friday. "I don't know how else to put it. If they knew what I had, I wish they would tell me what I supposedly had and we could do something about it."

As for the conspiracy theorists, Prior said: "I know what's out there … [but] I've been feeling great. I can't control what people who look on the negative side [say or write]."

Trainer Mark O'Neal said the injury "stunned" him because the Cubs had been "very careful and diligent to make sure we didn't do too much with him. I don't think anybody feels we've overdone it this spring."

One thing that seems certain to me is that there isn't enough hard or circumstantial evidence to say anyone blatantly lied in this case.

Ruin a Promising Pitcher's Career for Dummies - by Dusty Baker

Edited by Tony La Russa

I thought La Russa did the foreword. Relief pitching matchups: A labor of paranoia

Indeed. Tony wrote the foreword. Duncan was actually the editor. There is a new edition coming out in which Duncan details his demanding of Anthony Reyes to use a two seam fastball despite the success he has achieved with a 4 seam. Ground balls are key.

Even though this benefits the 'stros, I feel bad for Prior. He had a great future in front of him until Dusty pitched his arm off.

Ruin a Promising Pitcher's Career for Dummies - by Dusty Baker

This is what i keep thinking about, why do Prior and Wood constantly get hurt...why do realitivly young guys have problems so often and in Priors case, so early in the season? Are we unlucky, are the preparing poorly, or are they weak armed pitchers? Is this all really from 2 1/2 years ago?
