There's downplaying the absence of Clemens, and then there's this:

AP"]KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- As far as Andy Pettitte is concerned, he and Roy Oswalt have been the top two starting pitchers for the Houston Astros all along.

Pettitte said Roger Clemens would be missed during spring training, but that the NL champion Astros didn't have anything to worry about.

"We are going into it the same way we did last year," Pettitte said Saturday after the first full workout for pitchers and catchers. "Everyone needs to chill out and know that Roy and I are No. 1 and 2 just like last year."

...............

"We have to go out and win with what we have," catcher Brad Ausmus said. "We know Roy and Andy are 1-2 around here, and that's the way it was before Roger got here. We need people to step up and perform, but we're not worried. Roy and Andy are a pretty good pair of pitchers."

does the same guy create talking points for all Texans?

that's downright Orwellian.

Uhh, didn't Andy show up about a month before Roger? During the offseason?

Astro's pitchers think they're gonna get away with just oswalt and petite!?

So? We have Zambrono and Prior. But we're not going to get very far with just 2 very good picthers either. We need one of either wood or miller to come through for us just as much as they need clemens to be considered a "serious" contender.

I'm pretty worried about the back of the rotation. I have faith in Backe as a 3 but Wandy Rodriguez scares me. Astacio has a good arm and pitched well in the second half of the season. He should be very good, as a fifth starter. The wildcards are Hirsch, Buchholz and Nieve. All three of those guys have better stuff than Wandy.

Hopefully Clemens will come back. Two inexperienced starters isn't an ideal situation for a contending team.

Hmm. This is a little confusing:

AP"]KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- In a Feb. 18 story about the Houston Astros, The Associated Press erroneously attributed a quote to Andy Pettitte.

Astros catcher Brad Ausmus said "everyone needs to chill out" and know Roy Oswalt and Pettitte are Houston's top two pitchers. The quote was erroneously attributed to Pettitte.

"We are going into it the same way we did last year," Pettitte said Saturday after the first full workout for pitchers and catchers. "Everyone needs to chill out and know that Roy and I are No. 1 and 2 just like last year."

If that's the quote they incorrectly attributed to Pettitte, did they change it to make it seem like Pettitte said it?

It makes a little more sense that Pettitte wouldn't say any of that stuff, but Ausmus is still quite wrong.

Ausmus is as close to worthless as a baseball player can get w/o starting drama.

I agree, it really isn't enough to have 1-2 good starting pitchers. No, it's not going to be fine, Mr. Ausmus, even if Oswalt and Pettitte are legit #1 and #2 starters.
