While going over some of the top collegiate Seniors for '06 who did not get drafted, I came across Shawn Scobee.

The former 5th rd. pick who decided not to sign with the Cubs and attend CSF was one of those who did not get drafted after his Junior year.

He spent his 1st two years at Cal St. Fullerton before transferring to Nevada. He is now into his senior year where he has still shown tremendous power, but has not made enough contact yet in the hitter friendly environment that Nevada plays in. He hit 18Hrs in just over 200 ABs, but hit under .260 w/60+ Ks.

It is highly unlikely he'll get drafted where he originally did or see the same signing bonus.

Thanks for the info. UK, I completely forgot about him. I imagine Adrian Ortiz should be draft eligible again soon. I haven't kept tabs on his progress at Pepperdine, but IIRC I believe he was another guy we that we drafted high and were not able to sign.

Ortiz is just a Soph., he started every game for the Pepperdine. He's got a long ways to go, but he'll have over 30SBs. He'll likely take that next step as a player this year, he'll never hit for power, but should do well. At this stage, he's more advanced than Scobee 2 years ago.

His line from last year:

231ABs 65H 7DB 7TR 0HR 8-10SB .281avg .320obp .372 slg 9BB 26K

Talking about players the Cubs couldn't sign....too bad they couldn't sign Matt LaPorta.

Yep, back at the time of the draft, Callis said in a chat right here at NSBB that he was the one late round pick that the Cubs should make every effort to get signed.

Ironically he left out LaPorta in his report card:

The One Who Got Away: OF Sam Fuld (24) fell in the draft after a disappointing junior season at Stanford, then rebounded with a banner summer in the Cape Cod League. C Landon Powell (25) could rebound to become the first college senior drafted in 2004 after using the summer to get himself in better physical shape. 3B Jefferies Tatford (46) could be a high pick in 2006 after three years of refinement at Louisiana-Lafayette.
