Now that the Reds have hired Krivsky, I've seen a lot of speculation in the media that he is going to follow the Twins model and build for the future with a focus on pitching and defense.

There's also a lot of speculation that he'll trade off parts that will be too expensive down the road in order to have a strong foundation and that he won't try the "quick-fix" moves meant to appease a restless fan base. In all of these speculations, there is some thoughts that Dunn, Griffey, and Milton will be put on the block. Some think this could happen soon, while others think it may be a longer process.

But anyway...I think it's time for the Cubs to make a play for Dunn.

I'd offer a package of Pie, Dopirak, and two pitchers from this group: Marmol, Ryu, Williams, Wellemeyer, Gallagher, Marshall, or Guzman.

Depending on what other teams put on the table, that sort of offer could be tempting to Kivsky as he builds on the future.

And what happens to Murton, especially if you don't use him in this trade?

He becomes the fourth outfielder/platoon partner with Jacque Jones or he's moved in another trade.

I would have included Murton in the trade, but I'm thinking Pie and some pitchers would interest them more.

This is why if we get Dunn its more likely to happen during the season, when Jones no longer has a no-trade clause, Murton has had a chance to prove himself (or disprove himself, if you think Dusty will sit him past April), and Pie may be called up.

The guy i'd like to pry from the Reds at this point is Ryan Freel. He can start at 2nd and backup 3rd and OF, and would look great in the 2 spot if we move Walker. Come to think of it, the two players match up fairly well salary-wise, and Walker would be a good fit in that ballpark. I think he may be available because he's currently not slated as a starter on the Reds depth chart.

Then again, the depth chart on the Reds site could have been written by anyone and may not be reflective of the team's priorities.

At any rate... Walker for Freel anyone? Is Freel to similar to Hairston?

i would love to see what freel could do in our #2 spot. if we could get dunn AND freel, our OBP problems would be over--but i doubt we'd be so lucky.

i'd with guzman, hill, and epatt. see where it goes from there.

Getting a Freel would Dusty proof this lineup even more. Who do the Reds have for SS?

i really don't want to give the reds pitching. that is the only thing we have on them.

dunn would like nice but we got jones instead. don't want to give up murton.

don't think the reds will go all pitching and defense. they may go pitching and youth but in that bandbox..you better have some o.

face it guys we have an outfield of murton, pierre and jones in wrigley. hope murton hits 30 or our outfield won't hit 50 as a group

If defense is what they want, try selling them on Jacque Jones by eating his entire salary, assuming a deal can't be made sooner than we're able to trade him.

Jones + Hill + Marmol/Gallagher + cash

Or add Williams to that list above and have them throw in Freel.

i'd give the reds at least hill and williams. if guzman gets a crack at the rotation, they'll be totally expendable, anyway.

how about williams, guzman, pie, epatt

for

freel and dunn

Jacque-O Dundee can't be traded until June 15th unless Jones gives them permission.

We already have Jason Bay there. Maybe we could put him in Right field, though.

I think one thing that has been noted is that Krivsky isn't looking for band-aids or quick fixes to the Reds problems. That being the case, he isn't going to be interested in Jones or Walker in any deal. Those players don't help the team in the future.

If they trade Dunn, it will be because Krivsky wants to acquire players to help down the line.

I think a deal is possible, but the Cubs will overpay.

Houston would love to get Dunn as well and would likely offer a package that includes Lane or Burke along with a pitching prospect like Hirsch. Krivsky would likely push for an arm like Patton from the Astros or maybe Pence for the outfield.

Hirsch is a nice looking prospect and if the Astros offered him in a deal for Dunn, the Cubs would really have to step to the plate.

Furthermore, we have to look at what other teams might offer for him. Would the Red Sox jump into the bidding, possibly dangling prospects like Lester or Pappelbon? Would the Cardinals offer up Reyes along with another player or two to get him? Would the Dodgers have interest and how much would they pay?

The Reds are going to want pitching in any deal. They are also going to want the jewel of someone's system to trade him. In order to get Dunn, the Cubs will have to offer Pie and whoever the Reds rate as our best pitching prospect.

That being said,

This line-up:

CF Pierre

2b Walker

1b Lee

Lf Dunn

3b Ramirez

Rf Jones

C Barrett

SS Cedeno/Perez

would look awfully good.

I'd love to have Dunn, but I'm anxious to see what Murton can do in a full year in LF. We already lost a few key draft picks and don't have many top notch prospects in our system left, I don't want to give away the few that we have when Murton might get the job done.

I think the OF, the teams offense for that matter, is almost exclusively dependent on Pierre getting back into form. I don't think Murton will struggle, but I don't believe he will amount to what many on here expect of him, at least this season anyway.

Regarding Pierre, I don't know how many times I was cursing this team for not getting on base and providing opportunities for Lee and Ramirez, whenever ARam didn't play due to a hang-nail. I still believe that was the overriding detriment to last years team. If we can get the Pierre of old this season, and get at least average production out of Lee, and largely, the rest of the lineup the offense will be fine. Pitching is another story. I think pitching will have to exceed their past performances as a whole, and I stress "past performances" because I did not want to use the term potential. We all know they have potential. I know I said before last season, this Kerry's make-or-break year, but injuries hindered that. I think this year really is his make-or-break year. He got the surgery, should have sufficient time for recovery. Prior needs to step up. Hopefully, Maddux won't frusturate me so much this year.

But overall, I think if they do get a little above-average pitching and steady offense, with a particularly strong year from Pierre, this team will take the Central.

Hendry's done dealing for now. If he's going to go after Dunn it will be in June or July. But really the only way he'll do it is if Murton sucks bad.

If he waits for Murton to stink up the joint he is going to have to pay a high premium in players.

Look, I'd like to have Adam Dunn in our outfield as much as anyone else but...
