what would you do when current cubs come up for free agency in the next two years? who would you offer arby to in hopes of getting picks (and do you think they would be Type A or B)? who would you let walk?

i definitely offer arby to:

juan pierre (overrated, definitely will be a Type A, we have pie -- although if he struggles this year, i may rethink this)

todd walker (he's obviously not in our future plans, and i think he's a type A if he doesn-t get hurt again -- grudzielanek was this year -- and after the way we've treated him this offseasonk, i can't imagine he'd want to come back, so it wouldn't be risky)

questionable:

kerry wood (i think i prolly would, and hope he doesn't accept, although worse things could happen. i really don't know whether he'd pull down a type A or B designation)

barrett ((i believe after '07) i would, cuz he's gonna be, what, 31 that offseason. this is definitely a no-brainer if we can get a legitimate RF bat, lessening the need for strong production out of the C position. he should definitely be an A, so we'll get good return, and we'd be avoiding the inevitable 30s catcher decline.

hairston ((after '07) if epatt is looking legit at that point, i think this would be a good move. a draft pick or two would be a solid return on jhj (who i'm thinking will be full-time 2b starter in '07) , and even if he took it, he might cost $3m and could take some pressure off epatt and help in the outfield again.

williamson: his value to others depends on how he performs this year, but he's expendable to us with two setup men signed through '08

prolly nots:

rusch: (('07) i think glendon wouldn't be able to command more on the market than he'd get out of arby, so we'd get no picks and be stuck with glendon for another year.

definitely not neifi, for same reasoning as rusch

You definitely offer arbitration to Pierre. He'll likely want to cash in on a multi-year deal, so he's unlikely to accept arbitration.

I'd offer it to Walker as well. His salary is low enough that the financial risk is low. Someone would likely sign him, so the reward is worth the risk if he accepts.

Wood is the tricky one, but assuming his option is declined, which unless he reverts to 2002-2003 numbers it will be, I'd still offer it if he pitches the entire year healthy. If Wood is healthy, he's going to get offers like Burnett got this year in the 3/33- 4/40 range. With his injury history, he's not likely to accept arbitration on a one year deal so he's worth the risk to offer. Also, it's likely the Cubs might want the extra time to continue negotiations with him.

Hairston I'd only offer arbitration to if he fits within the team's plans. He could accept and become a very expensive bench player.

I believe you offer arbitration to Wood simply for the extra negotiation time and for the draft picks. I still think Wood will be a Cub beyond 2006.

I'd definitely offer to Barrett also. And you forgot a big name, Derrek Lee. He won't ever get to that point, but if it happnes, you take your chances, as he will almost certainly be a Type A.
