I know it's a slow news day, but I found this nugget as I was doing my daily Internet search.

The Yankees have some interest in Piazza and will consider whether to offer the Cooperstown-bound catcher a contract, American League sources told Newsday yesterday.

Piazza's agent, Dan Lozano, has called Yankees general manager Brian Cashman regarding the free agent's interest in playing for the Yankees, and Cashman did not dismiss the offer.

On the contrary, it is expected that the Yankees soon will consider the merits of signing Piazza -- primarily as a designated hitter -- if they haven't already.

That makes a lot of sense for Piazza, and is a classic Yankee risk. I am very anxious to see how he does now that he will be able to concetrate on hitting full-time.

Reports say that the Phillies have had some early talks about bringing in Piazza pending the Michaels trade.

...the Phillies have had "very preliminary" conversations with Piazza's representatives at the Beverly Hills Sports Council about signing the Norristown native...

A source yesterday downplayed the story, indicating that the team didn't have an opening on the roster at this time.

That, of course, could change. If the rumored deal of outfielder Jason Michaels to the Indians for reliever Arthur Rhodes goes through...

If he came to the Phillies, he could be expected to share time behind the plate with Mike Lieberthal and occasionally give Ryan Howard a rest at first base against some lefthanded pitchers.

Philly Inquirer also says this:

"The Phillies have talked with free-agent catcher Mike Piazza about a possible contract, a baseball source said, but it seems Piazza might have better options with the San Diego Padres or Chicago Cubs."

huh?

I doubt the Cubs are involved. I wouldn't be surprised if players and agents leak out nonsense with the Cubs attached to create interest and up the price. Why did Weaver mention the Cubs as a possible destination only to have the Cubs sign Miller, the next day, and sources refute that they were ever considering him because of his rumored high price? I'm suspicious... THe Cubs certainly wouldn't ask him to catch. He would be a PH only.

I wonder why the Yankees weren't mentioned?

Here's ESPN's take:

According to ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney, if the Yankees don't sign Piazza, the Padres have the best shot at landing him.

If Piazza wants to come here a power bat off the bench and backup first base I'll take him.

The Yankees will probably snatch him up though he could be really useful ginving Posada and Giambi days off while Dhing. I wouldn't be surprized with a 25 homer season if he got enough at bats from them.

I always thought Piazza would make a good fit with the Angels. He could still play some catcher with a tandem with Mathis and could play some DH and 1b as well.

With as broken-down as Piazza is starting to become, I don't see him going anywhere other than the AL so he can DH.

Agreed. He's never been a good defensive catcher, and with his body not holding up anymore he would best be used in the AL.

The New York Daily News reports:

Mike Piazza told friends from the Shea Stadium clubhouse that he was nearing a deal with a team in the American League, but as the Daily News reported yesterday, it almost certainly won't be the Yankees.

My guess is Angels oe Rangers.

It now appears that Piazza's suitors are the Phillies and Padres.

The Padres and Phillies emerged as the most likely possible destinations for the 37-year-old catcher yesterday as the Yankees reportedly decided against pursuing the former Dodger and Met as a part-time designated hitter and backup catcher.

The Angels, Blue Jays and Orioles have also expressed interest in Piazza, who hit .251 with 19 homers and 62 RBI in 113 games for the Mets last season.

“Our talks with Mike's agent (Dan Lozano) have been in the formative stages,” Padres General Manager Kevin Towers said.

“We expressed interest earlier. And about a week ago Lozano called back.”

Yes, he's a Norristown native. However, my bet is on the Padres to sign him.
