Hoops,

We're dying here! We need some hope about another big acquisition the Cubs might make before spring training. (I don't want to wait for June. June is too late.)

Can Hendry surprise us with another Derrek Lee or ARam or Nomar? I just don't see anyone like that out there.

I did. 3-4 weeks ago I told you folks with high probability the Cubs would sign Wade Miller.

Edit: December 28th.

Yes, you did! And Wade Miller is significant. Now can you get us Abreu or some delightful surprise?

Ill shoot for Hoops :D

:cough: The cubs are reportedly close to a deal which would send 2b Todd Walker, starter Jerome Williams, and Matt Murton to Philadelphia for Slugger Bobby Abreu :D

I dunno I'm needy for another hoops prediction myself, ignore my silly speculations

give me Dunn hoops

Dunn makes me feel funny on the inside

What'd I say?

You should take it easy, man. It's funny that you would actually go out of your way to find a Dunn trade reference and comment on it. Just chill out, let people dream. By the way, I love the Tobias quote.

All right, here it is:

Reds get:

Jerome Williams

Rich Hill

Roberto Novoa OR Scott Williamson

Felix Pie

Jerry Hairston Jr.

Cubs get:

Adam Dunn

Ryan Freel

Eric Milton

Reds move Griffey to 1B; Hairston and Womack compete/ share leadoff in CF til Pie is ready. Aurilia plays second. They improve their pitching immediately and for the future while cutting payroll to sign FA in the offseason.

Cubs get exactly what their lineup needs. Yes, Milton had a horrible year and a big contract. But before last year he was about the same as Jeff Weaver-- a reliable innings eater, and he could bounce back. If not, it's not the end of the world as he'd be at the back of the rotation. And did I mention the lineup?

Pierre

Freel

Lee

Dunn

Ramirez

I thank you in advance for bonking me over the head with a reality stick.

Phils are rumored to be trading Micheals for a 37 year old relief chucker from Cleveland (as I remember). That would eliminate the Abreu/OF log jam that they have.

With that being said, that is cheap for Micheals. Surely we have a broken down pitcher we could send their way instead?

Ah...I was waiting for your obligatory rip of Hoops. You're not a big fan. I think we've got it now. You don't have to post your feelings in every thread Hoops posts in. He's going to think you're stalking him after a while.

Hardly. I just happen to have decent contacts, and occasionally happen to be at the right place at the right time. Wish I those types of attributes when it comes to Wall Street!

Trust me, I didn't have to go out of my way. There's at least one Dunn trade idea in every thread in this forum*.

Hey, don't knock yourself, sometimes silly speculation is the beginnings of a good rumor, which can then ultimately lead to reality. In the age of the internet and sabermetrics, in my opinion the knowledge gap between a real GM and a die-hard student of the game (in terms of understanding player development, player projection and finances) has dwindled down. In all sincerity, I think there are at least 50 people on this site alone, who could make decent GMs.

As for new rumors, nothing new than what is already being discussed. I do get the sense that Jerome Williams is not in the club's plans, and therefore believe he will be traded at some point. I think the Cubs question his mental toughness as well as durability. I think the Wade Miller signing tells us more about how Hendry feels Rich Hill can contribute more than it does about Kerry's health. I still think Williams, Hill and Todd Walker will be dealt (either together or separate deals) to acquire bats.

I surely hope Hill is dealt. With the hype that Hendry has put around him as well as some comments from other execs (was that in a Stark column?), his value is probably about as high as it will ever get. I simply do not envision him having a long, successful major league career, and I would like to see us sell high for a change.

I wonder about what type of bat is he looking to get. Does he want to get a bigger bat for the OF or 2nd base? Realistically speaking, what type of bat could those 3 bring in?

Bobby Hill, Matt Bruback, Justin Jones, Brendan Harris, Ray Sadler, Francis Beltran, Jimmy Anderson, Felix Sanchez, Dave Noyce, Ryan Gripp, to a lesser extent Latroy Hawkins. (Hard to say he was at the top of his value, but they certainly got a great return on their investment, not to mention to sell high on Latroy would have been to trade him ~June 15th, '04 which is a ridiculous notion.

And what about all of the other prospects over the years that we held onto for far too long and got nothing or very little for? How about Sosa, the Farns, Patterson, Sisco, Kelton, DuBois, etc. And what exactly did we get for Jimmy Anderson, Andy Shipman?

I'd say we've had a pretty fair balance of selling high and waiting too long. Your claim implies that we never sell high. And yes, a relief prospect for someone as worthless as Jimmy Anderson is pretty impressive.
