The Bears are ready to trade out of the first round now that they have cornerback Ricky Manning Jr., but moving back to No. 42 might be too far down. They don't want to drop lower than 40 or 41.

It's gonna be really interesting to see what the Bears do. What time does the draft start? And so it should be what, 2 hours and 30 minutes after that when the Bears pick?

Could be longer. 15 minutes per pick. That's 4/hour.

Probably won't go that long, but it could be up to 6 hours (i.e. 4pm).

Holy smokes. Merrill Hodge is on Dan Patrick and he's borderline [expletive]. He thinks the Packers should take Chad Jackson and that Vince Young should be a 2nd day pick.

You really didn't need to qualify the first statement.

if there ever was a time to trade up and take a first year impact player it's this year for the bears. i don't know what they'd have to give up to get a shot at davis, but i'd give our next two first rounders, as well as this one, to get him--i'd also give up thomas jones if it would suit anyone in that position.

trading down smacks of rebuilding. we aren't rebuilding, we have less and less time to make good on our team's success.

I wouldn't give 3 first rounders for Davis. That's absolutely insane.

technically, it would only be 2, this year's first round pick would just be improved.

considering our track record with 1st rounders, we're bound to miss on the next two years anyway, why not make this year worth something? especially with a tight-end that gives you so many different options.

2 first rounders for a potentially great player is an easy deal to make. barring injury, vernon davis is a virtual lock to be a perrenial pro-bowler in the NFC.

Wow, a little overhype there, no? I heard the same about Bubba Franks.

I have no interest in such a trade. A tight end is still nice, but it's still just a tight end. If he's anything short of phenomenal, it's a terrible trade that will cripple this team longterm. And I'm not so sure I'd be as quick as you to dismiss this administration's ability to draft. If anything, I'd rather be on the receiving end of all those extra picks. Giving up lots for 1 guy rarely, if ever, works out as hoped.

Spending that much on one player, especially a TE, would cripple the franchise for a decade.

Chicago Bears CB Ricky Manning Jr.'s five-year contract included base salaries of $1.585 million (2006), $1.065 million (2007), $1.85 million (2008), $4.75 million (2009) and $4.55 million (2010).

Was anyone else surprised that Manning got that much money. After an astounding 2003? playoffs, I hadn't heard much from him. Anyways, hopefully Angelo knows what he's doing and can steal another couple underrated players on Saturday.

It's really not that much money. He won't see any of the money in the last 2 years.

You heard the rumors that the Bears are trying to trade Thomas Jones? What would you want for him?

I'd want a mid-first round pick, but I know it's not going to happen. I'd really like a 2nd rounder. But I think they can get the best deal by packaging him with some of our own picks. Or, if Indy wants him, send back Dallas Clark.

If Manning doesn't do anything productive, cut him after the 2008 season.

He will probably be asked to restructure or be cut after 2008.

I have never heard of this Manning Jr guy. Who is he? What does he play? Is he good?

If I recall correctly, he was the one who had 3 picks off of McNabb in the NFC Championshp game to propel the Panthers into the Super Bowl that year they lost to the Pats.

Kiper's final mock has us taking Chad Jackson WR, Florida in the first and D. Byrd TE, USC in the 2nd.

Do you mind passing along who he has the Bucs taking?

Marcus McNeil T Auburn and Cedric Griffin DB Texas.
