Bears | Team working on a long-term deal with L. Briggs

Thu, 13 Apr 2006 21:36:50 -0700

K.C. Johnson and John Mullin, of the Chicago Tribune, report the Chicago Bears met Thursday, April 13, with agent Drew Rosenhaus to discuss a long-term deal for Bears LB Lance Briggs. The Bears are optimistic a deal will be reached. Rosenhaus remained in Chicago overnight and will continue to work with general manager Jerry Angelo on a deal that could be announced Friday, April 14. Briggs has one year remaining on his original four-year deal that he signed after the Bears made him a third-round pick in 2003.

Great news. I hope we get him locked up long-term.

ESPNews just reportede that the talks have broken down. Says Briggs is asking for more money than Urlacher.

If true, that sucks. But I don't see how they could be really that far off if they spent that much time negotiating in person.

He is good, but he shouldnt be asking for more than Urlacher. For Ricky Manning is he thinking about comin to Chicago. That sounds good.

The Weak Side Linebacker in the Cover-2 usually has inflated stats. Not to say that Briggs isn't good, he is, but he's nowhere near the player Urlacher is. As tough as it sounds (Keep in mind, I really want Briggs back) the Weak Side linebacker is probably the easiest position to replace in the Cover 2 defense.

Tell Briggs he can get Urlacher money when he starts playing better than Urlacher.

And he'll just say, "look at 2004". Not saying he deserves more than Urlacher, but he has played better than him at times.

Lets just get the ohio state cb and Fasano. Id be happy with that draft.

I don't like either of those players. I think Youboty is overrated and Fasano is just gonna be average. Jonathan Joseph from the other USC is flying up the board (great speed) and is above Youboty now.

Really though, I have really turned my hopes to Marcedes Lewis. He has all the makings of an elite pass catching TE.

I didnt know that about The USC CB, but Kiper thinks were gonna take a CB first round and a TE second round because someone like Fasano will still be around in the second round. Well see though Id like to see who we take first TE or CB and if so who we take. Also if we get Manning that would be spectacular.

Yeah, I want to go TE then CB. I think there's a bigger difference between Lewis/Pope to Klopfenstein/Fasano than there is from the 1st round CBs to the 2nd rounders. I like the CB from Texas in the 2nd, who I can't think of his name right now. Good size, good hitter, hard worker....reminds me of a bigger Vasher actually.

Id be up for that. Fasano could end up being another [deleted] TE who is a worry for defenses. Id like to see Lewis or Pope and another solid CB probably the guy from Texas along with the trading for of Ricky Manning Jr.

Draft is coming up, I can't wait.

I'm actually sick of waiting. The NFL does a great job of capturing the attention of the masses all year long. They freaking had a live unveiling of next year's schedule. But I believe this is the latest we've waited for a draft, at least in a long time. It's usually in mid-April. I can't remember it ever being this late in the year.

I thought it was always last weekend in April.

Yep. 23-24th last year, 24th-25th in 04.

I thought it was the 17th or so a couple years ago.

Anyway, the Bears sign Manning to an offer sheet.

How do you guys feel about this move? COnsidering we will be paying him and losing a 3rd rounder, either they really must be high on this guy or who knows. Just seems pretty steep to me.

Apparently the management wasn't so hot on him but the coaches persisted.

I am feeling pretty good about the deal. Manning is an ideal nickle back in the Cover 2. He will easily be an upgrade over Azumah(At least his play last year). Nickel Back is a very important position in Lovie's D. The NB in the Bears D is on the field a lot.

The NFL in general overvalues draft picks. The draft is largely a crap shoot and for every Lance Briggs in the 3rd there are 20 Torrence Marshalls. The chances of us getting a player of Manning's caliber in the 3rd were pretty slim. Therefor there isn't much risk here and I see it improving the team.

Not an outstanding deal, but one that will improve the team.
