Weaver has produced 7 years of mediocrity. He had a brief period in Detroit when his ERA was under 4.0. Otherwise, his ERA has always been over 4 and the BAA him has been around .260. He's an average pitcher with an above average price tag who usually comes up short in big games. I think he's going to get a harsh reality check that the Dodgers probably offered him more than any other team will offer.

If Jerome Williams is traded as part of a trade for Soriano, or whomever, I wouldn't mind giving Weaver a low-base, higher incentive type deal.

I agree. That would be the only type deal I would offer to this previously high-priced hurler.

Weaver is a better pitcher than he's getting credit for here. He's far from an ace, but he's a quality #3 type pitcher and should get a Clement-type deal from someone.

I think Weaver has consistently shown he's not that good, and unless he's interested in a 1 year make good deal with the Cubs, I hope somebody else signs him.

That's what I'm hoping for. My Millwood comparisons are well documented.

He's exactly the type of predicatable innings-eater that is currently in vogue. He's averaged 222 IP of park adjusted, league average ERA over the past two years with LA. I'm not saying the Cubs should jump all over him. I'm just saying that someone will.

I agree with you. I see 3/27 written all over him. But do you find it at all strange that he hasn't had much of a bidding war at all for his services? The two most powerful bidders, NYY and BOS, as well as another frisky high payroll team, NYM, will probably stay very far away due to the fact that he failed miserably in NY. The Angels could step in, but they are typically a team that targets what they want and get it without delay.

I could actually see Detroit, with their recent history of overpaying for name veterans in an apparant effort to garner respectability, as a bidder, but I'm just not seeing a big market out there. There's a chance he slips through the cracks, or isn't willing to accept 3/27 and is hoping for 4/50, and will therefore take a one year make good deal.

A team could do worse than Weaver and 9 mill is the average for guys his age that perform with average numbers.

The biggest thing he has going for him is the fact that he doesn't walk a lot of guys and he is durable. A team with with a decent sized ballpark and solid defense gets the best value out of Weaver.

I still think that Weaver could be a stud closer.

Scott Boras (Weaver's agent) would beg to differ. He wouldn't let the Dodgers turn Dreifort into a closer, what makes you think he allow any team to turn (Dream) Weaver into a closeR?

I didn't say he would be, I said that I thought he would make a good closer. I'm sure because of money reasons he won't unless he falls on his face this year and the Closers keep geting 10 a year.
