If Bowden really is crazy enough to deal fonz for Patterson and even williams, there are alot of GMs who would overpay for soriano. How about swinging him to the Mets for Floyd and Hielman?.

Great idea, except for the fact that Floyd and Heilman are each worth more on their own than Soriano.

I seriously doubt that. There are plenty more RP's who can do the same thing heilman does and plenty more OF's who put up Floyd numbers than there are 2B's who hit 35hr, 95rbi, and 30sb a year.

I'd say we if can get Soriano for Patterson and Jerome Williams, we make that trade. Also come July/Trading Deadline, if Soriano is not in the Cubs' plans and we don't plan on re-signing him, ship him off to the AL, where I think we could get alot for him, in return.

Considering we already have a player who outproduced Soriano at his position last year, positional scarcity isn't a huge motivating factor in this deal. Forgetting Patterson for a moment, let's look at Soriano v. Williams. Williams was 47th in baseball in ERA as a Cub, 57th in WHIP, and 37th in K/BB. Soriano was 57th in OPS, 131st in OBP, and 52nd in RC27. Add in the fact that Williams is 5 years younger and much further from free agency, and there's not a whole lot of reason to trade Williams for Soriano. UNLESS, you can get better value for Soriano by retrading him, in which case you'd probaby be better off working a 3 way deal.

You'd have to retrade him, because he won't come close to living up to his next contract.

Williams is a bit of an enigma for me. It looks like we are going to need a breakout season from him to truly compete, yet his past inconsistencies keep his value relatively low IMO. Yet, when he's good, he's good.

I guess you could just be happy with him for a year and let hime walk-offer arby and get the picks from him- I wouldn't include Williams however-our pitching is far too thin for that-we have pitchers we can deal with Cpatt to fluff the deal up-

Cpatt+Wellmeyer+Novoa for example-maybe they want an insurance policy for Vidro-send them Walker and they can send us Church( )....

I would HATE to see Soriano here. I would rather have Walker at 2B. Soriano is the typical Hendry guy who has power, speed , low OBP, and a boatload of Ks. No thanks. I don't like his me-first, team-last attitude either.

I think Soriano's upside is higher than Walker's. I don't think he would do this, but he is capable of hitting .290/.330 with 30 somethin' homers. Since Walker is going to be traded apparently, I wouldn't mind Soriano taking his place, especially considering the friendly hitters parks in the NL Central.

That would set him up perfectly as next offseasons "must get rid of to improve the chemistry, and therefore our teams' chances" scapegoat.

Soriano's unwillingness to attempt to change positions to me shows that he is a selfish player. Him on the team would not make a significant improvement unless you like the same hot/cold offense we had to deal with the past 3 years. Our offense had been that way because we don't have many guys with good OBP and in that aspect Soriano doesn't help us much. We have enough homers we need more RBIs and OBP if you ask me.

That being the case, I don't think I'd be too eager to ship out Williams at the first opportunity.

When reading the actual article, I feel that the inclusion of Williams isn't at all founded on anything except the guesswork of the writer :) Who knows who it'll be - might as well be

Btw, I don't agree that Soriano is only marginally better than Walker - I rather have the idea that we can hardly expect anything offensive from Walker, while Soriano has a lot of potential....although I doubt if the Cubs would be the best place for him to work on his negative stuff.

Anyway, from Rotoworld.com: (paraphrasing)

Patterson could be traded today already to either the O's or an undisclosed NL team - which rotoworld says should be the Nats.

Very curious - gonna keep an eye on the news today :)

The article seems to guess that the Cubs would have interest in Soriano, based upon previous interest. There's a lot of guesswork all around.

As I've said earlier, I'm not sold on Soriano, but if we're going to trade Walker (which I wouldn't do), then I'd rather have Soriano than Neifi/Hairston at 2b.

I'm not in favor of trading Williams to get him, however.

I'd offer Patterson along with anyone from Wellemeyer, Novoa, Wuertz, or Brownlie.

Soriano is only marginally better. And he doesn't have any potential, as a 30 year old, we've see the best he'll do, and it doesn't come close to living up to the hype.
