I wonder how he is going to get to that next level....is it by adding that changeup? I hope so.

Either that or a good cutter. He definitely needs to add a pitch if he expects to succeed.

He needs to keep throwing strikes, that's the key to his success. The curve alone is good enough to give him a major league career, at least as a reliever, if he can just stay in the strike zone, something he hasn't been able to consistently do so far in his career.

A quality changeup would be the most important thing he could add to get to that next level.

Watching him pitch, it's not completely him not throwing strikes. It's umpires not knowing how to judge a ball that moves that much. When it hits the front of the plate at the guy's belt and is at his ankles as it crosses the back of it it's tough to call.

Once umps get a feel for his pitches (gets Maddux-like calls) he'll be set.

alas, this can change game to game. I've watched enough Zito to know the umps are never too consistent.

Yes, but how many pitchers get Madux-like calls? Maddux and Glavine...and not that many others. Most have to overcome inconsistent umps.

I always thought Clemens got a ridiculous amount of strike calls thrown his way just because of who he is.

I agree. When he threw that piece of broken bat at Piazza and the ump called a strike I knew something was up.
