Start praying to someone that he hits .300.

This shouldn't suprise anyone. Hendry has stated several times that his priorities for the off-season was getting a lead-off hitter, improving the BP & the defense. JJ is a GG caliber defender.

Yeah but they are using the Suntimes as their source and all that article says is that the Cubs confirmed that they offered a deal which is rumored to be no more than 2 years but probably one. The Daily Herald has also confirmed an offer. Sportsline is overhyping this situation.

You're right. I'm beyond surprises at this point.

What media outlets are these? I've seen articles from the Trib, Herald, and Suntimes saying that the Cubs offered Jones a 2-year contract, but nowhere have I seen/heard anything about it being very close.

This is from the Sportsline Rumor Mill by the way. I don't put much stock in this.

I don't think too many people are surprised, just disgusted.

Echoed. I think people saw this coming. But that doesn't change the fact that Jones sucks in nearly every aspect of baseball, giving him multiple years would be like blowing a hole in the bottom of a boat, and that Hendry should have done a much better job in preventing this from being a viable option.

I think if this happens it's pretty safe to say the Cubs offseason has been a bust.

A JJ signing would bust anybody's offseason.

You two aren't allowed on NSBB for at least a week if we do sign J. Jones.

Disgusted is an over- reaction. They have no idea what JJ will do in a Cubs uniform. I would have never guessed & most baseball people I have spoken to, would have never guessed that D.Lee would turn into Pujols in 05'.

I'm willing to see it play out, before I completely chastise Hendry & Cubs management. This is why grading teams & GM's on their off-season is absolutely ridiculous.

The best part about this deal is that it's gotta be a multi-year agreement. SWEET. 'Cause I'm sure Jones is going to get better with age.

The fact that Jones will likely be batting between our 2 best hitters makes it a nice 1-2 kick in the groin.

Calm down folks, this isn't a done deal. CBSsportsline claims that several outlets say they are close but what they actually say is that a contract offer is confirmed.

Most point to the Suntimesfor it's info. That article doesn't say they are close to a deal just that a contract was offered.

According to major-league sources, general manager Jim Hendry has made a contract offer in the last couple of days to free-agent outfielder Jacque Jones, but the Cubs also remain in a trade scenario for an outfielder. Hendry declined to comment on the matter Monday.

The offer to Jones is believed to be no more than a two-year proposal and not as lucrative as the three-year, $15 million deal the Kansas City Royals reportedly have offered. The St. Louis Cardinals also might be in the bidding.

Daily Herald

While still trying to make a trade for a right fielder, the Cubs have confirmed that they’ve made an offer to free agent Jacque Jones, who has played his entire career with the Minnesota Twins since 1999.

General manager Jim Hendry would not reveal the nature of the offer, but reports out of the Twin Cities have it as either one or two years. Jones made $5 million for the Twins this year, when he batted .249 with 23 home runs, 73 RBI and an on-base percentage of .319.

For his career, Jones is a .279 hitter with 132 homers and an OBP of .327. He’s believed to be fielding offers from the Kansas City Royals and St. Louis Cardinals.

They're also still looking to trade for a right fielder. It's likely their proposal to Jones is only for two years. He has a three-year, $15 million offer on the table from the Royals.

Dude, I love that speed in the 2 hole.

Thinking about what you love in the 2 hole is just about as disgusting as this report concerning Jones :x

So......

Pierre, Neifi, Lee, Jacque, Ramirez, Walker, Murton, Barrett

How's that look? Gotta break up them righties in the heart of the order, dude!

I'm ready. Let's play some ball.

If this is true and it's the last major move Hendry makes...who should be the next Cub GM?

Now, if Hendry pulls off a major trade for an impact bat then this deal isn't so bad. Maybe Murton is going to be used in a Abreu trade? Maybe a deal for Tejada is in the works?
