The Orioles had more discussions with the representatives of Miguel Tejada yesterday, and the club remains confident that he'll be its shortstop on Opening Day.

"We are just moving forward," said Orioles executive vice president Mike Flanagan. "From what we heard this week, we're going ahead with the fact that he is on our team."

However, according to industry sources, Tejada's representatives have not backed down from his trade request. Tejada's agent, Diego Bentz, declined to comment yesterday, citing agency policy.

According to sources familiar with the Orioles' plans, the club also is not interested in trading Tejada for prospects, and in any potential deal, the team would be looking for an All Star-caliber player in return. As of now, it appears that teams have been unable to match the Orioles' asking price.

I guess that would take us out of the bidding.

Isn't Garland going to be a FA next year though? Would the Orioles want to trade for him not knowing whether he's going to be around for a while?

The White Sox match up well with the O's in a trade in this regard. This team isn't going anywhere and won't for awhile but if they trade for the trusty vets they want it might get them ahead of Tampa......might.

IMO this is a move to appease the fan base. The O's will remain crud for many years unless they get some team to extremely overpay for Miggy.

A trade could be made on the contingent that they can sign Garland long term. That said, I'm not sure the Sox can afford Miggy.

I agree. Baltimore has plenty of money and if they trade Tejada to the White Sox I'm sure they would give Garland a very nice deal to stay. If not, the fans would go ballistic and and since the reason to trade Miggy was to still "stay" competitive the O's would be losing a huge opportunity to build up thier pitching staff with good young talent.

Can I be on record as stating that I think that "Miggy" is the worst nickname in baseball. It's so effeminate that it sounds like it should be the name of my great aunt.

"Go get your Aunt Miggy some tea."

"Aunt Miggy needs her medicine so she can stay regular."

I wish we could have a moratorium on baseball nicknames until we figure out what stays and what goes. Berman's names would be out automatically to start. There are waaaay too many of them, especially on the Cubs. I particularly hate Dusty's system of adding '-ie' or '-y' to anyone's name in order to spruce it up. Sorry for the rant, it's still early, and I need more coffee.

That's funny. I often think that too about the nicknames with all athletes.

Hah, I use Miggy because I'm always worried I'll misspell Tejada (I copy and pasted his name).

I didn't know Dusty did that. Coreyie, Kerryie, Derreky, Aramisy, Moisesie, . Sounds like fun. :D

Matt-y (Clement) is one example. He also does the "Big Choi" "Big Z" crap that bothers me. Be creative Dust-y, like with your lineup, but without the stupidity part.

That sounds eerily like what Mr. Hendry was saying roughly a year ago about someone who played in Baltimore last year...

Here are some more of Dust-y's doozies:

Grudz-y

Good-y (Tom Goodwin)

Well-y (Wellemeyer)

Holl-y (Hollandsworth)

My wife calls those guys that too...but then, she works in a daycare with 2 year olds all day long, so I cut her some slack. :D

I know one nickname that doesn't fit that mold; Dusty (and others) call Glendon Rusch "G-Unit."

But all it is is a play on the guy's first letter in his last name, unless it's indicating something about a characteristic of his. A better use of this is my buddy whose last name is Berning is nicknamed "Burn Unit". That's creative.
