I'm still angry about that slide into the Wrigley bricks that essentially ruined his Cub career.

I thought it was the slide into the revolving sign at Busch that really did him in?

That was a nasty injury.

I was at the game in St. Louis that Bill Mueller got hurt sliding into that sign. For some reason, he was always one of my favorite Cubs.

That was the end of the 2001 playoff run no matter what the standings said after that. Sub in Bill Mueller for Ron Coomer in all those June-August games and we make the playoffs for sure.

Wasn't it Mother's Day when that happened?

I thought it was in late May. But, considering I also initially thought it was in Wrigley, my recollection of the incident may be a bit off.

I think it was a Saturday Fox game...it was definitely in May though.

No, I think it was a Sunday WGN game. And I also believe that it was Mother's Day, just like it was Mother's Day when Sammy got beaned by Solomon Torres.

It was also Mother's Day when the wind was blowing out at Wrigley in 2004 and the Cubs and Cards had a homer-fest that ended up getting wiped out by rain. That day has been a very strange one in Cub history.

IIRC, that was a cold day as well and the RF for the Cards ended up hurting himself pretty badly...his name escapes me... maybe Eli Marrero ?

That's the one. Ended up getting shipped to Atlanta that offseason in the deal that brought Ray King to STL, IIRC. Alou had two homers in that aborted game and I think Edmonds did as well. It was 11-9 Cardinals in the 4th when the game was called.

ah, you're right. something about spring holiday Sundays that kills the Cubs.

I haven't seem the details for the deal yet, but as long as it isn't ridiculous this looks to be a good move for the Dodgers. With Izturis out unitl around June, Mueller looks to be a good short range option, if not a viable long term (as in this year and the next) solution.

First impressions are sometimes misleading but you have to like what Coletti's done so far. In only a weeks time he landed the best FA player on the market and added a servicable vet. With the infusion of young talent which figures to take place over the next few years the Dodgers look to be in an enviable position. With their payroll, young talent, and a weak division they should be division favs for at least the next five years. The other 3 teams sure aren't scaring anybody.

Mark Grace hit for the cycle on Mother's Day 1993, right?
