Nice veteran, left-hander might look nice with the guys we have now... I know there's no chance the Angels will offer him arbitration. Think we'll make a run?

I don't know. With Washburn, you could be getting a 16-win guy with a 3.20 ERA, or an 8 win guy with a 4.75 ERA. It would be a gamble.

Yeah, I hope we end up with someone better as a starter. Wood is not gonna be ready and Maddux will most likely fade this year IMO. Willis is avaialable Jim. Ha-ha!

Well, let's assume that Pierre eats up 6 million of the 22 available, we still have 16 million.

If we trade Walker, that adds 2.5 more. We definitely have the cash to get into the Millwood bidding; personally, I'd prefer going after Weaver.

I agree that the Cubs need a #3-4 starter, just in case Kerry isn't healthy at the start of next season (plus I'm not convinced that Rusch should be starting either). So, who do we get? Ideally, it would be a lefty who chews up innings. Washburn could certainly be that guy. I also want to see the Cubs pursue Weaver, Vasquez and Morris (in that order).

So that always brings up the ? why did we even resign Rusch? I was against having him back.

I think the Cards will overpay to get Vazquez, and it seems like Morris will be a SF Giant...

Vance, why Weaver? He's coming off a down year and I think his salary is something like $3M more than Washburn's. Washburn looked good last year.

Also, Washburn's a lefty.

I think after the offers come in, Weaver will be the better bargain. I also think Weaver has better stuff than Washburn. That's more personal observation than anything definitive. While Weaver made more in 2005, I don't think he will in 2006. Finally, I'm not of the persuasion that we have to have a lefty in the rotation.

I dont think we HAVE to have a lefty, but it'd sure come in handy.

I'm not against having Weaver for the right price, but his numbers aren't very settling.
