    Cubs' Ohtani Optimism Waning

    The closely-guarded secret that is Shohei Ohtani contract negotiations are taking a turn against the Cubs, reports USA Today's Bob Nightengale.

    Recently, we've seen a spate of teams shift focus away from Ohtani. With the Mets, Red Sox, and others moving away from Ohtani, it felt the Cubs were part of a dwindling set of serious competitors for the two-way player's services. Now it appears, for unknown reasons, the Cubs may need to do the same.

    Who does that leave in the mix? We haven't heard anything at all from the Yankees but there are rumors swirling around the Giants and Blue Jays; Ohtani has reportedly met with both over the past several days.

    I've never quite figured out how to say this diplomatically so I just left it out entirely.

    According to discussion in our Ohtani thread, Jesse Rogers is also all but ruling out the Cubs, so it's probably safe to believe it.

    I dont want this to appear as sour grapes, and maybe I dont understand his true value, but I would rather spend 50+M per year divided among 2-4 guys than 1.

    I know what you mean with this but come 2025, Ohtani technically becomes two elite players. That is what the good thing with Shohei is, a club can spend money elsewhere (bullpen for example) because he occupies two positions and does them both at a high level.
