With a nickname like shark he needs to say with the big club. He looked very good today. That splitter was sick. Marquis, as all of us have said needs to go. I'm so sick of seeing him in a cubs uni.
Does anyone have his debut on vid? On the radio they had Lou recorded from yesterday and he was saying how impressed he was from him and if he can keep it up it would be like trading for a relief pitcher. Somebody asked him if he was here for the long-term and he said if he can keep it up there's no way he will be demoted. He wants power arms in the pen.
I'm glad to see the Shark called up because I want to see him pitch but you have to wonder if this is the best move for the Cubs. Is the organization sold on him now that he seems to have figured it out albeit a small sample size in AAA? We have Wuertz, Ascanio, and Lieber in the minors. right now, and all with MLB experience some have actually been pretty good :)
July 22nd: 120 pitches. July 9th: 111 From May 21st through June 17th his starts went: 114,119,100,115,101,109 Nothing crazy like what Dusty did to Prior, Z and Wood but still seems high for a 1st year pitcher.
I don't see what Yost had to do with Gallardo taking a wrong angle while covering first base and crashing into Reed Johnson. I guess you could argue that it was Ned's fault he kept him in the game after that, but the ACL was torn on the play at first, and once it's torn it can't be torn any worse. I'll say the Brewers are pretty lucky that Yo didn't hurt his arm while compensating for his knee, though. Is this actually true? If Yost pulls Gallardo out of the game after he gets hurt, I'm not sure he's out for the year. No way can you blame Yost for Gallardo. Yost should never have put him back but it was obvious the damage was done when he tried to avoid fatso. If anyone is to blame for losing Gallardo, it is Fielder.
Cano has definitely been on fire lately. As for Varitek, I highly doubt they sign him to a crazy deal like the Yankees did for Posada. They know better than that. I can see them signing him to a 1yr take it or leave it deal. The Posada deal was pretty bad for the Yanks.
It sure doesn't seem like he does. The rate of sliders has doubled since last season, actually. From FanGraphs.com:
FB SL
2005 Indians 82.6% (92.8) 15.6% (86.4)
2006 Cubs 82.8% (92.8) 14.7% (84.2)
2007 Cubs 86.2% (92.3) 9.7% (84.4)
2008 Cubs 75.8% (91.1) 23.0% (83.0) The data has his change at 1.2% this season. I'm not sure if he throws one, so it's likely a misclassified slider. Same with last season, when it was over 4% Not surprising at all. Without his fastball being the same he has to rely on his secondary pitches. Unfortunately, for him it hasn't been working great. He's very hittable right now
I think he's cooked. Last year Howry was the same type of pitcher as he is now when he lost his velocity. Somehow he managed to get it back midseason. But this year his velocity hasn't come back and when you mainly rely on the fastball to get batters out, you will be affected by the loss of velocity. He had a nice run in Chicago but he has no business pitching in the 7-9th innings in close games. At least he was worth the money he got unlike Eyre who was inconsistent and injury prone.
It just goes to show that we shouldn't just expect Rhee to come back and dominate again. A few prospect we've had were unable to bounce back from TJS. Let's hope Rhee can.
Regardless if the run last night meant anything, Howry is nowhere near close to what he was during the 2nd half of last season. Do we really want a setup man with an era close to 5?
If the player is Adam Loewen (and Adam Loewen who's trying to pull an Ankiel, no less), can it be that hard? Can't they place him on waivers/DFA him for purposes of sending him back to the minors and, given the player, not have to worry about another team claiming him if they try? Probably. Ankiel went through that type of process and wasn't claimed by anyone.
