  1. Do it Hendry! That's one of the 3 guys I've wanted the Cubs to sign this offseason.
  2. Hendry must feel really sorry for the guy after Dusty did a number on his arm to keep signing this guy year in year out.
  3. There's no doubt in my mind that if any deal goes through for Peavy, Vitters will be included.
  4. Nope. I think Wood is a goner. I'm starting to believe Wood's store more now when he said he would stay here on a 1 yr deal and that's why the Cubs didn't offer arby, because they knew he would accept the 1yr offer to stay with the club. It's obvious Henry has other plans. Getting Wood to stay on a 1 yr deal was a no brainer.
  5. I don't know why but I feel we will lose this one.
  6. Is Kane good or what. Seems like almost every game he at least has a point.
  7. Hermida. Without a doubt Hermida. I don't want to pay Bradley megabucks to sit on the bench with injuries. It's not like Hermida hasn't had his own durability issues either.
  8. Huet is garbage. One of the dumbest FA pickups by Talon. Huet did nothing to do deserve a contract like that. I agree he is overpaid... but he is not garbage at all. He thrives on getting multiple starts in a row like he did last year. His numbers were really good last year, hence the large contract. Contract year syndrome. Plays good to get a fat contract and then doesn't do squat.
  9. Put a fork in him. Wow, I don't think anybody expected this.
  10. Huet is garbage. One of the dumbest FA pickups by Talon. Huet did nothing to do deserve a contract like that.
  11. This definitely leaves the door open for us to trade for DeJesus or Teahen.
  12. Kaplan has good inside info. When he hints to something there's usually a reason.
  13. It's definitely cryptic. My guess is Dempster signing or a possible free agent target/trade.
  14. I'm not surprised. I had a feeling when Demp got his deal we would be out of the Peavy sweepstakes. I'm a bit disappointed but Hendry can make it up by signing Furcal and Bradley :)
  15. Definitely Bradley. Hermida, in his career has been injury prone himself.
  16. According to another board Levine was just on ESPN 1000 and said Bradley is the only RF Hendry is looking at. Gotta love that .436 OBP and .999 OPS. His injury history is somewhat discouraging, but with our depth we could afford to have him play in only 120-130 games. DO IT JIM!!! PLEASE! Make my day. Bradley, Furcal and Peavy are the guys that I want and I can live without Peavy if we can somehow get the other two :)
  17. I've got to wonder how much his bed crapping in the playoffs cost him.[/quote] I don't think much at all, I heard the Braves were offering something like 4y at 67m, and I think others had simliar or higher bids. As wild as Dempster was in the playoff game he still was one pitch away, from going 5 scoreless innings. GM's will shake that off, as nerves with starting his first playoff game, because it's not like he was crushed. He was lucky his outing wasn't worse than it was if you ask me. You can't walk that many people and get away with it and It finally caught up to Demp in the last inning.
  18. Why do people always want to think that when a baseball player struggles, it's because of effort? Frankly, if I'm looking for reasons for the decline in Derrek Lee's numbers the last few years, effort is the last thing I'd try to attribute it to. It's because people have come out and said that Dempster dedicated himself during the offseason to be a better pitcher and that was the reason he supposedly had a career year.
  19. So because we didn't sign Dempster before the deadline he counts as a Type A signing for us. What are we limited to now? Can we sign another type a?
  20. I'm OK with this. I'm not crazy about it though. It's a HUGE risk IMO. Dempster supposedly worked hard to get to where he was last year, is he going to put the same effort again? I just have a feeling this is a total contract year syndrome situation. Lee did the same thing and now he's nowhere near close to what he was that one year(I'm aware of his wrist injury but he should have been fully healthy by now).
  21. Speaking of that, here's one unnamed executive who believes that Dempster will sign this deal: The rumor from this article is that the Yankees are prepared to offer Burnett 5 years, 80 million. http://www.nypost.com/seven/11182008/sports/yankees/yankees_prepare_a_j__offer_139209.htm I'm pretty sure I'd rather go 5/80 with Burnett than 4/52 with Dempster. I dunno. You think Burnett's risk of injury is less than Dempster's risk of suckitude? They're both pretty yucky looking deals. I'd rather give that money to Lowe, myself. So you would give a 4/42 to a 36yr old pitcher? I wouldn't.
  22. It might not take Peavy and Johnson out of future talks, but you'd have to imagine that Hendry would want to move Marquis first before landing another pitcher and being stuck with Marquis. I'd be fine with Dempster coming back. And I'd be thrilled if they still landed Peavy. Bring back Edmonds on the cheap and let Johnson/Edmonds patrol CF, Fukudome/DeRosa patrol RF and Fontenot/Cedeno/DeRosa play 2b. Give Hoffpauir the 5th outfield job and call it an offseason. The offense isn't any different than last year, but the pitching is certainly better. ETA: Oh wait. Theriot or Fontenot will likely be involved in a deal for Peavy, so I guess we'd still need to shop for a middle infielder. If we want Marquis gone all we have to do is eat 3-5 mil of his contract and he will be gone. I'm sure there are several teams that would take Marquis at 5-7 mil for one year.
  23. While I do agree that Dempster will be a high risk/high reward in 2009 I think he is a better value to the Cubs then say AJ Burnett. We've talked about before, but Dempster clearly has the stuff---even when he was closing---to be a very good starting pitcher. IDK if Demp will be AS good in 2009 as he was in 2008, but I don't see a Carl Pavano here. I believe Dempster next four yrs will be his best of his career. It's a risk, and if Dempster didn't have the talent he does have, then I would suggest we move on, but clearly Demp has the talent to pitch at this level. The question is: will he? I think he does. Give me Burnett over Dempster. Burnett has been starting for a long time and has been consistent doing it. He also has better stuff than Dempster. They're both the same age with Burnett being only a couple months older.
