  1. Disappointment to say the least but I probably figured Furcal burned his bridges with the Cubs 3 years ago.
  2. Very happy to see him signed to another team. Now let's sign Bradley :)
  3. That's why i wanted this trade to have been completed before we resigned Dempster. Like it or not we gave big money to Dempster and because of this we already have a lot of money tied up in the rotation.
  4. It probably has to do with his asking price and his horrible defense.
  5. Derosa is a nice player but he's not nearly good enough to hold up a trade for far better player. He's replacable, and just because you don't care about his age doesn't mean that it's not an issue. No, that production is not replaceable at 2B. Now if you tell me you are working on a Furcal deal after DeRo gets moved for Peavy, then we'll talk. But let's not make it seem that DeRo is some scrub player that can be easily replaced by a Fontenot or old ass veteran. Yeah, DeRosa really showed up in the playoffs when he fumbled an easy DP in Game 2 (opening the floodgates) and then went 0-4 in Game 3. Furthermore, why does DeRosa seem to skate by with mistakes while someone like Soriano never does? I can remember a few times during the season he made dumb defensive or baserunning plays, and nothing was mentioned. DeRosa is making a lot less than Soriano. Soriano is king at base running and defensive gaffes. And I'm sure I don't need to show you just how bad Soriano has been in the playoffs for us.

  7. i would not miss any of those players. Well, if that's the case, why don't we go ahead and throw in 10 more guys as well and REALLY make sure we get this deal done? Why are you so hung up on quantity? They aren't good players. If you are offering the core, what difference does it make who the 7th and 8th guys are. Because the 7th and 8th guys might be the guys who could acquire someone like Hermida instead of paying big bucks for Bradley, which in turn could allow you to spend those big bucks on someone like Furcal. Hermida trade isn't happening. They are asking for top prospects and we don't have any of those(except for Vitters). We need to be realistic with what we have and what we're capable of doing. Marlins are in no hurry to move Hermida anyway since they moved Willingham to the Nats.
  8. I have a problem with DeRosa being included. The last thing we need is to get rid of a good player who happened to show up in the playoffs unlike his other teammates. Who do we replace him with? Fontenot IMO isn't good enough. I don't care what DeRosa's age is. The main focus for the Cubs is to win the world series, how are we going to do that with a lesser offense?
  9. If he can't get Bradley, I'm sure Ibanez is next on his list. Ibanez wants to go to Philly though, so hopefully they sign him. If we can't acquire Bradley this will be a very disappointing offseason. Ibanez's bat is nice but he's old and his defense is horrible.
  10. Peavy has Towers by the sac, not Towers by Hendry's sac. If we wait 2 months and give up less, while in the process signing/trading for a quality LF is that really a bad thing. I have seen two people use LF now. Did I miss something in the last hour? Is Soriano going to be playing somewhere else? I can only wish for that to be true..
  11. The biggest difference is that Peavy is signed long-term and is thus a burden for several years. Johan was gone after the season, anyway and at least garnered two picks if they lost him to FA. Pads are in a much worse leverage position with Peavy, IMO. I agree 100%. Hendry did the right thing to tell Towers to kiss it.
  12. Could have had him for nothing? I don't think so.
  13. Without knowing all the details, it's ridiculous to assume that Hendry is the one that failed. I'm not going to blame Hendry on this one. We all know the guy makes trades to improve the team. The bottom line is the Padres were asking for too much from us.
  14. See that's the thing. Trading for Peavy before we signed Dempster made a lot of sense but now that we have the same rotation as last year Peavy was just an added bonus and not a necessity like fixing the offense is. I don't care what the stats say, I can't another year of crappy offense during the playoffs, it needs to be shaken up.
  15. Well if the doc's thought he was still capable of playing the OF he should be a Cub shortly.
  16. I'm ok with that. Now trade for marquis and add Furcal and Bradley to solidify the offense.
  17. That's a pretty bold statement to make. In this value, I think DeRo actually has considerable value. If there's 10 teams that are calling about him, I don't think it's far fetched to think he could get something that could help us on his own. He could help alot of different teams. Agreed. Dero is a very good 2B and hold a lot of value. That's the problem though, he also has value to us because I don't think you can replace DeRo with Fontenot and think everything will be ok. I don't think Fontenot's bat is good enough neither his defense to be a full time player.
  18. He's from California so I think he just doesn't want to leave from there, especially when you consider he's at the end of his career.
  19. Olney is only repeating what's been said since the offseason began. The Padres want their payroll to be cut down to 40m, if not lower. Giles and Peavy alone make up half of that at 20m. Giles has stated that he won't waive his NTC. That pretty much forces San Diego to trade Peavy. Towers' only job this offseason is to meet ownerships request. His job probably depends on doing exactly that. Towers is probably playing the leverage game to the full extent that he can with Hendry, but Hendry isn't stupid. One question that begs to be asked is why they picked up the option on Giles? They didn't have to do that, and considering that they're dealing Peavy in a lose-lose situation from a negotiation standpoint, it really seems like it was an incredibly stupid thing to do, unless they have a gentlemans agreement that Giles will allow them to trade him to at least a limited number of teams despite his NTC in exchange for picking up the option, which he may not have gotten as much money on the FA market had they declined it.His buyout was for 3mil and his option was for 9mil. They probably felt that it's best to keep him when there's a difference of only 6mil.
  20. Yeah, that's exactly what i was thinking. Why even bother trading Dye then?
  21. Agreed. That's why I want the Cubs to sign him so badly :)
  22. Just an example of what Florida is looking for to move Hermida. http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports_baseball_marlins/2008/12/rays-reject-her.html
