  1. Yes, it is god awful. He had a worse year than Juan Pierre. You can count on him being worse than Juan was agains this year. He's crap. Goony the kid is 24, and improved from his age 23 season...his OPS+ or whatever you referenced above may have been worse than pierre's but the guy actually had a higher OBP...and he had more walks than Pierre in almost 170 fewer at bats...., if we hypothetically got the guy, we'd not be looking for power out of him, it'd be for his defense and potential...if you stuck him in the lineup like this: Soriano Murton Lee Ramirez Barrett Derosa Tavarez Isturiz Pitcher You'd have a great top half of the line up and then 7-8 would be weaker, but good-great fielders....and if Tavarez were to improve at the same rate he did last year, you'd have a .340+ OBP out of him in the top 1/2 of our regular players last year. Again, I'm not saying he's great by any means...just that the "i'm never watching the cubs again" comments by some above are the usual over reactions.
  2. I'm not necessarily advocating this....but is the idea of it it really as god awful as some people are saying? His OBP last year is only one one hundredth less than Jones, He plays very good defense he's only 24, and has shown improvment in walks and OBP in the 2nd half of the season last year his OBP was a lot closer to .350. he's fast as hell (waiting to get flamed for acknowledging this) I'm not at all saying we should give up a ton of good prospects for him, but the guy has some good potential to be a solid MLB player...he's not the second coming of Neifi.
  3. From ESPN: The East Valley Tribune is reporting that the Diamondbacks are talking to the Rangers about a trade for reliever Akinori Otsuka, 34, who could challenge incumbent Jose Valverde for the D-Backs' closer job. He put up a great season last year in the AL...we don't have many real bull pen needs but it might allow us to trade pitching for a bat....
  4. Houston also kicks in WIllie Tavares.
  5. Anyone know what happened to that ABSOLUTE STUD Cuban player from the WBC last year? I thought he could play just about any infield position and hit for a ton of power. I was thinking I heard that he had defected at one time or another but then I haven't heard anything since. Any info is appreciated.
  6. Isn't it a lot more realistically going to look like this: Zambrano Lilly Marquis Hill Prior/Miller/Guzman/Marshall et al. I just can't see the lefties being set back to back.
  7. Ditto that. One thing that makes me happy about this off season is that really no other Central division team has done a ton to improve (Lee to the Stros being the exception). I think there is little doubt the Cubs got better...how much better is still to be determined...but with Pettite leaving, may be clemens too, and 3/5 of the cards staff leaving only to be replaced by Kip Wells...well, we're moving in the right direction, if only by standing still.
  8. That I could easily live with...(although maybe that's because I have been dreading the idea of 3/27).
  9. lol Signing Marquis to 3/27 would be so ... Cubs. I actually would be surprised if this doesn't happen. Is he this year's Jaque? At least marquis can hit.
  10. Rumors are flying down here (STL...I can see Busch out my window and my firm has some connection to the Cards) that the Cubs just signed Marquis to a 3 year 27 million deal. Tell me that can't possibly be true...they mean a one year deal between 2.7 and 3 million...right?
  11. Can't -- I got my line tied up with 1-900-Mix-A-Lot. Are you shaking that nasty thought?
  12. Link? No offense...but 16 posts makes me skeptical...or maybe its just me praying. I bet this thread gets to 50 pages in no time.
  13. Aside from all that, and aside from Murton' superior OBP...I also think you can't overlook how much Murton's produciton would be helped in the 2 hole. Being protected by Lee, as opposed to being inbetween DeRosa and the pitcher has to help him a TON. As is, he's simply the best #2 choice around for us.
  14. I'm going to lose it if we end up with Marquis, he sucks! This is ridiculous please for the sake of all Cubs fans NO!! Z Lilly Hill Marquis Prior/Miller/Marshall/Guzman This should be fun. Suppan over Marquis. Marquis is a project, we don't have time for project acquisitions right now. This is really terrible new if we end up with Marquis. Give me Suppan and call it a day. Zambrano Lilly Suppan Hill Prior/Miller/Guzman/Marshal/Marmol/Mateo/Cotts that isn't a horrible rotation. if you throw Marquis in there instead of Suppan, it sucks.
  15. Is Kenny going to trade their entire staff? Does this take houston out of the Pettite chase?
  16. One of the best bench bats we've had in a while....not that its saying much.
  17. Yes, that Josh Hamilton. There is a very small discussion on this in the minor league forum but I thought it qualified for a transaction thread. Any chance he stays with the club? That's an interesting power bat for hte bench...I'll take him over Bynum.
  18. My thoughts too. That's an interesting power bat for the bench.
  19. Hope they take him up on it. If we miss Lilly AND Meche, what does that mean for us? (And don't just grumble Marquis, I am sincerely curious) Hendry becomes even more desperate and throws 6 years and $120 million at Zito, meaning we can't afford to sign Z to an extension. Z signs with the Cardinals next offseason and tortures us for the next decade. Another post like that and you should be banned for life.
  20. Steve Phillips is a fountain of knowledge, here is his latest post: The Royals, Cubs and Blue Jays are in on right-hander Gil Meche.
  21. I like Drew, but no way in hell would I have given him 5/70 guaranteed. It's better then handing out $18-$20 per year for the tandum of Meche and Lilly. I just hope they're not going after both. If they got Drew they'd still be 2-3 pitchers short. Is Meche going to do any better then Guzman, Marshall, Dempster or Cotts? Probably not, IMO. Certainly not when you consider the cost. Meche is horrible. Lilly may be able to put together a respectable year, I don't know, but I wouldn't be willing to gamble 4/40 (let alone 5/55) on it. I don't know about horrible. Over the last 3 years he's had a 3.88 average in day games (26 starts)...league adjusted that's probably closer to the 3.4-3.5 range. I'm not saying he's an all star, but he's not "horrible".
  22. I'd say he's put up #3 numbers for at least 3-4 years now...and has averaged very close to 200 innings for about 7 years...I'd sure take him as a #3.
  23. I've heard almost nothing about Mulder, Suppan and/or Weaver...is there anything brewing with any of them? (not Cubs specific, just generally)...(edit)..I guess you add Marquis to this list as well. I wouldn't mind signing Suppan for a #2-3 guy...probably would stay away from the other two unless you could get Mulder very cheap and let him be your 2007 Wade Miller. Anyone heard anything?
  24. Refreshing insight, but I don't think anyone is advocating "Man, we've got to get Counsell...he's the last piece to the Puzzle" I thought the discussion was "Counsell or Bynum." In that context, I think it is fair to "pick" Counsell...would we like someone better, hell yes, but as I understand it that wasn't the question. And yet Bynum, as bad as he is, was still better than Counsell last year, and younger and he's cheaper. The discussion was that Counsell is supposedly on Hendry's radar, that's terrible news. Only when guaged by OPS...anyway, this discussion is nowhere near worth the time its taking...and pointless on several levels... Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving. Yes, only when using a measurement that actually attempts to value a player's overall production at the plate is it easy to see that Bynum was more productive at the plate than Counsell last year. But Counsell puts that ball in play, Neifi style all the way baby. You win. No reasonable person could ever think Counsell and his higher OBP and fewer Ks would be a reasonable option over Bynum.
