  1. Because no team could use a .359/.410 hitter with a little pop, a lot of speed. great defense, and a good arm who sells a ton of merchandise and opens up a huge potential fan base? He may be expensive....but I'll take Ichiro at that # and not think twice about it....Rickey Henderson averaged a .400+ OBP for another 10 years past Ichiro's current age...There's no real reason to believe that Ichiro won't put up a .320 average with a .375+ OBP steal 30+ Bases and score 110 runs for the next 5 years...those are numbers that would make him very valuable to just about any team 20M valuable? Yeah...I think so. Would I rather have him at 16-18? Yes...but if it takes 20, considering what he brings both on and off the field, and that like someone said above, he's not Juan Pierre...he's actually a very good player. I think he'd fit very well with our team...even in right field....it won't happen so it doesn't matter but I think calling this proposed deal horrible is just plain wrong.

  3. Maybe he sees that they aren't making the playoffs this year and wants to get traded now....the teams that he could possibly go to next year are all already in contention.
  4. What I've been seeing in names being mentioned, I don't think Hendry can do anything that won't piss off a ton of people. Most of the big names are rentals and people will be pissed if he gives up young players. If he doesn't make a big deal, people will be pissed because he didn't make a big deal. I'm not defending Hendry, but I can see the critics lining up and ready to pounce on July 31st no matter what happens. I think the only way he can please everyone would be to trade Jones, Izzy, and Eyre for Arod plus cash and then resign Arod to an extension at $1 million per year for the next 5 years. I don't know if that is true. But the fact of the matter is that it is Hendry himself who painted the Cubs into this corner. So no matter what happens I think the criticism can be justified. Deep inside of me I'd like to see Hendry trade Z for A-Rod straight up. I don't think Z will be in a Cub uniform next year and Z has a lot of miles on a young arm. He's the bait that can actually bring in what the Cubs desprately need, more bats. I know it won't happen though. That would be tempting, but I just don't have faith in any of our other pitchers to step up to being the ace of the staff. If there was some way to be sure that Zambrano wasn't going to resign, I'd be all over the deal. And who starts game one of a playoff series? (or game 2-3-4 for that matter?) Your choices are Hill, Lilly, Marshall and Marquis at that point...that's not a playoff caliber rotation....
  5. Eeek....only one ball over .400 ft....
  6. Most patient...hitter...ever. His BA sucks and his fielding is crap, but man can that guy take a walk. Plus his power always seems to pick up in the second half, and he's been on the trading back on a seemingly annual basis. Maybe getting out of Philly would be good for his psyche as well, a la Scotty Rolen. http://www.ailurophile.com/karenslife/images/pat-burrell2.jpg Ummm...someone is taking their man crush on Burrell just a "BIT" to far.
  7. We are currently tied for 2nd (in the loss column) for the WC...now that means nothing...but damn...we've got to be buyers at the deadline right? If we could improve this team...with just one big/kinda big/halfway decent bat...and maybe a relief arm...we just might have something.
  8. The White Sox only failed to score in 2 innings… Scored 2 or more in 4 different innings…and STILL LOST BY 6 RUNS…. 20-14 was the final score…. That my friends is hard to do…I'd venture a guess its maybe the first time in MLB History? If not….I bet it hasn't happened more than a handful of times. Fred...any insight on this feat?
  9. tell you what - i'll go eat the steak, you watch the cubs During times the Cubs are actually enjoying success and making a push for division/WC: watching the Cubs and eating ramen/mac n cheese > missing the Cubs for a good steak dinner Depends on how cute his girlfriend is. :D (no offense was intended....it was just sitting there...someone had to say it)
  10. I thought substance abuse/performance enhancers were a 50 game ban...?
  11. I want them dead and buried before the deadline. But they have reason for optimism right now with Carp coming back soon. But if the Cubs and Brewers come out strong after the break and the Cards continue to muddle a few games below .500, I don't think we'll see any big deadline moves from Jocketty. They may not sell everyone off (Rolen?), but you won't see them make a splash. I completely agree...I'd like to see them lose a couple more series in a row...and Jockety start selling off pieces...Rolen/Edmonds...some of their remaining bullpen arms...The team is not good right now...but if Carp and Mulder come back at 80-90% of their former selves, their starting staff becomes very serviceable...and they've still got that pujols guy.
  12. Even this being the Cubs...there is absolutely no way they send Marmol back down. He has been too good.
  13. Thats why I've been so conflicted about them beating the D-backs lately.... I'd sure love to see them 7-10 games back and selling at the trade deadline. One good thing is...their bullpen is overworked (3rd most relief innings this year in the NL) Factoring that, with the consideration that 1/2 of their starting staff is converted relievers and you have to expect that they'll have a lot of tired arms in the 2nd half (and they've also played a much easier schedule than us so far(far fewer games against teams with winning records)...so by the numbers, they should have a tougher 2nd half....I just keep remembering that they are the cards...and I won't feel good till they are dead.
  14. I'm also, very slowly, gaining confidence in our bullpen...(shudders)....I like that Dempster got a couple weeks off to rest....hopefully he'll be fresh in the 2nd half. Marmol has been outstanding....Howrey, Wuertz, Ohmen, Petrick have all been solid to good....If we can shorten games in the 2nd half to 6 innings for our starters thats where really big streaks start..... (also...a very small part of me still has visions of Kerry Wood riding in on a white hospital gurney and being a very effective late 2nd half set up man....Wood, Marmol, Dempster....the other guys can pitch the 6th, and matchups....).... :fingerscrossed:
  15. But we're just as close to getting the Wild Card as we are First Place in our division....and I think its good b/c the 3 teams out West are going to beat up on each other all second half.... Is it ok to start feeling good yet? These last 2-3 weeks sure makes one think big.
  16. I didn't even know he was still on the team?!!? Oh he's there alright. Hasn't been on base in over two weeks (in other words has done absolutely nothing in over two weeks), but he's there. That's not true at all...he's kept more productive or useful players from having a chance....that is something....
  17. If we win tonight I hope he does.....
  18. Wheee! Now if we can just win tonight we're calling this series a HUGE success...
  19. dang nabbit brewers...stop scoring.
  20. 2 run shot!!! get into that head further!
  21. I think he should rest till after the ASB at least.... :D I think he should rest until Spring Training '08 Just to be safe....
  22. I think he should rest till after the ASB at least.... :D
  23. Don't you feel dirty rooting for the Cards? I know I had a hard time just not being upset that they won last night...
  24. Is Junior really worth a solid young ML starter and a very solid AAA prospect? I'm not sure I'd want to give that for Junior...who'd be the 5th starter?
