  1. I think at this point, we have to consider the real possibility that Theriot will be bench/utility. I think he might need another year before he's ready to start everyday.
  2. Yes, I understand he was simply told they wanted somebody with experience.
  3. No, Cashman isn't stupid; but if A-Rod really wanted to be traded, I think Cashman would oblige him. Pitching is what the Yankees really need. I don't think the loss of A-Rod would really hurt the Yankees and their star-studded lineup. Ken
  4. I think hiring Piniella gives us the opportunity to get great players (ex. A-Rod). Whether you like him or not, I think Piniella has a good reputation around the league and tells other teams the Cubs want to win.
  5. I couldn't disagree more. I don't think Hendry is a dummy (I reserve the right to be wrong). I believe he saw the Dusty's lack of leadership and lack of holding players accountable. The hiring of Piniella tells me three things: 1) Hendry wants to win now because Piniella has a reputation for being a manager who really wants to win 2) He wants to change the lazy clubhouse mentality that seemed to permeate under Dusty's leadership. I can guarentee that Piniella will expect his players to give 110 percent. If they don't, he will get on their a** big time. 3) Piniella gives the Cubs a manager that might draw great players (A-Rod for example). Piniella does have a world series under his belt and a great tenure as Seattle's manager. And honestly, do you really think Hendry is motivated to keep things the way they were?? If so, give Baker another contract. Whether or not you like Piniella, the move tells me Hendry wants change and now. Ken
  6. ouch...
  7. Regardless of whether you wanted Lou or not, he is better than Baker (imho) and appears to have been given a promise of $ and a commitment to win...NOW! I've heard many of you say that it's all about talent. Well, let's see what we can do with $115 million to bring us the talent we need to bring a World Series championship to the North Side! If we really have the talent, it doesn't make that much difference who manages. Lou seems to be well-liked by his players, but he also holds players accountable. This, in and of itself, will be a refreshing change. Ken
  8. OK, Thomas. You think I should have blind faith in Lou? That hasn't worked real well for me in the past with Cubs managers. I was just joshin' ya. The proof is in the pudding...and words can be cheap. But I do like what I hear.
  9. The only positive I see is that bringing a "big name" manager gives me the impression that the Cubs want to win now. I like that mentality. I reserve judgment until I see what kind of off-season we have. If we get a big name pitcher (Zito), and a big bat (C. Lee or Soriano), I like our chances. Time will tell. I thought that Baker was a big name manager and he didn't bring much to the table. You have a point that I can't really argue. However, I was looking at it more from the Girardi (less experience) vs. Piniella (seasoned manager).

  11. I wholeheartedly agree. I'll give Piniella a chance; however, Rothschild deserves no more chances. He has done absolutely nothing with our pitching staff. grrrrrrrrrrrrrr
  12. I don't know, the more I think about who Hendry is interviewing, the more I'm leaning towards Brenly as the next Cubs manger. I liked alot of what he had to say in the booth. He definitely understands the concept of OBP. Certainly there are others Hendry should probably look at, but with the names we have so far, my vote is Brenly. Anyone else? Ken
  13. You better be wrong about Rothschild!
  14. Good words...I whole-heartedly agree! Ken
  15. Why? Cause he was a hell of a hard worker, and pretty good on the basepaths from what I remember. I think he'd be a good 1st or 3rd base coach. And he's a pretty vibrant guy, and I like having coaches that are likeable. Why not? Well, he sucked, had a horrible approach, and there's no evidence whatsoever that he has any qualifications to coach. Perfect example of a crappy hustler by the way. Ramirez jogging is 800 times better than Dunston running out another ground ball out. Boy, for someone who's a NSBB Hall of Famer, you sure have a nice attitude. :? And what's the attitude you don't like? The fact that I'm not enamored with bringing back failed ex-Cubs to coach this team? The fact that I'm not enamored with mediocrity or nostalgia for a team that has been nothing but terrible for most of my life? The fact that I actually what the Cubs to hire the best people and find the most productive players they can, regardless of past affiliation to the team? You don't like that attitude? Sorry, but you just seem really touchy, agitated, and grouchy. Fine, if you want to be that way, but geez...it's only a game. Have fun...life is short! :)

  17. In theory, I agree. So why didn't we get rid of our GM this year?
  18. I guess the reason for starting this thread was to ask the question for the 2007 season. I think most of us can agree that it's not so much the amount of money, but how an organization spends it. Be smart with what you have .... which the Cubs have not done. With the players we have right now, both on the club and in the minors, should we raise the payroll to meet our goal of fielding a winning team? Certainly we can all agree that we need a big time bat in the OF. We also need to get at least one starting pitcher that can be a number 1 on the rotaion (Zito, for example). In fact, I wouldn't count on Prior at all, so I'd go for two starting pitchers. Both of these acquistions are going to cost us significant money (if we want to compete). What do we do with Barrett? Do we keep him at catcher and re-sign Blanco or is there another option. It seems to me that we may have to approach the 100 million mark to get what we want. I think we're going to have to overpay, but at this point, I'm not sure we have many choices.
  19. For me, I'm just glad it's anyone BUT Baker. He has to be the biggest joke in the profession.
  20. It's a shame we have to waste that great stat by poor position play.
  21. Shows how much impact strikeouts have in the making of a contending club. Ken
  22. Why would they do that...since he obviously made the wrong choice the first time.....grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
  23. I think you have to pick and choose. I think you could give Theriot a shot, but I think Guzman is too big a risk to count on for next year. But thats one of the main reasons I really hope they keep Murton. I also wouldnt mind getting someone like Lofton for next season to give Pie a little more time, but I wouldnt like throwing Pie into the majors next season because he doesnt seem quite ready. So I think, like with all things, you have to find a balance. Is Hendry capable of this maintaining this balance?
