  1. That could have been a hell of a lot worse. Prior needs to settle down.
  2. Junior Felix! Bill James even touted him over Junior Griffey. That was until a couple of years later when it was discovered that Felix had lied about his age.
  3. I did in passing, but I will add another one: Drew Hall.
  4. Speaking of Jackson Melian, wasn't he the guy that, while traveling on a team bus, witnessed both of his parents die in a car accident? Edit: Yes, he was (although I'm not sure on the "witnessed" part). I can't imagine how awful that must have been. http://ingeorgewetrust.blogspot.com/2006/04/prospect-retrospect-jackson-melian.html
  5. Sort of an odd thing to hear about from Maddux and sort of an odd thing to see reported by the coaching staff. Maddux does have a sense of humor. He was joking with Pole. That, or he is straight, flat-out, friggin' insane.
  6. George Bell Yeah, I guess that trade kind of paid off. Any others I forgot?
  7. Greenwell actually had a decent career until he decided to be a race car driver. The guy finished at .303/.368/.463. Green monster-aided he might have been, but the guy was no bust. I have quite a few Mike Harkeys and Ty Griffins amongst my old time collection (currently residing in my dad's attic); but for colossal busts, I don't don't think you get much bigger than Shawn Abner.
  8. I would. Hendry has shown to be far better at getting trade value than he has at outright signing free agents. 90% of Hendry's major successes as a GM have been in trades. But what about trading veterans for prospects? The only success so far is Murton, but he wasn't exactly going hard after Murton, and he didn't really trade veterans for prospects. He mostly traded prospects for a veteran and had a prospect thrown in. From what I can tell, Hendry can do a decent job of trading prospects for established young players. But he couldn't pull off a Marlins deal. I can't remember the last time the Cubs were able to trade a veteran major leaguer for a prospect that managed to pan out. For some reason, I keep on thinking back to 1999, when the Cubs traded Jose Hernandez and Terry Mulholland for Micah Bowie and Rueben Quevedo. It looked like a good trade at the time, but neither Bowie or Quevedo amounted to anything. The last Cub GM that I can think of that managed to make a veteran for minor leaguer swap with any degree of success was Dallas Green, who got Ryne Sandberg in exchange for Ivan DeJesus and, to a lesser extent, Keith Moreland for Mike Krukow. Other than that, in the interim, I can't think of any such trades that paid off. I have little trust in Hendry's ability to acquire prospects for veterans.
  9. Pick up an old Bill James Baseball Abstract from the 1980s and you will find some of the same criticisms that you see now (well, except for the stuff about a manager abusing the arms of young, incredibly gifted pitchers -- that's a recent phenomenon). Amazing how little has changed.
  10. Oh please. I'm sure the producers of the "Screamin'" Stephen A. Show are basking in all of the attention that they've received from all the controversy generated by a couple of podunk blogs (no offense to the bloggers, but in the grand scheme of things, your blogs - Deadspin included - qualify as podunk) and a Ted Greenstein article in the Tribune. And quite frankly (no pun intended), even if Dusty were to face a hostile crowd, my bet would be that he comes off looking sympathetic. Besides, Hendry isn't going to base his decision on whether to hire or fire Dusty based on a TV show that nobody watches.
  11. I'm a D-Train fan and while, yes, he is probably overhyped to a degree, I do think he's the genuine article. I'm not sure what to think about this trade for the Cardinals. They've had some success trading prospects for veterans, trading Adam Kennedy along with Kent Bottenfield for Jim Edmonds (highway robbery) and cashing in on a half-season of Bud Smith (along with Placido Polanco and Mike Timlin) to get Scott Rolen; on the other hand, the Mark Mulder deal ain't looking so hot. So while I'm not sure I want to see the Cardinals get Dontrelle, I can certainly see this deal backfiring on them. I will give Walt Jocketty this, a deal like this would certainly prove the man has balls.
  12. http://chicago.comcastsportsnet.com/images/content/cubs/rusch518a.jpg Just a thought: The jokes about Glendon's weight stopped being funny, oh, years ago. Where's Pedro's dead horse? Is that really a joke, or a pretty good point about the hypocrisy of the Cubs? Glendon's body shape and results are every bit as indicative of motivation problems as Sisco's, or Jerome Williams'. Why did Glendon get a fat contract when those guys more or less got tossed to the curb? Maybe he was in shape when he signed the contract and celebrated by going on an eating binge. Honestly though, my guess is that Glen-done is given the benefit because (a) he is left-handed and (b) he is a veteran. You should know by now the way this organization works.
  13. Neifi was down there on all fours and, you know, sometimes the coaches like to take a seat out in the bullpen to catch some atmosphere and, well, you know, Neifi is still gainfully employed and gets all kind of playing time despite the fact that he is non-productive, and....well there has to be reason for this. I don't want to speculate or anything...Neifi just sucks...and blows.
  14. I, for one, still wish he was back in the Cub system.
  15. Are the Braves out of it? 4.5 back in the Wild Card race. I'm surprised Milwaukee didn't give up more for Wickman. Turnbow has been killing them. I agree about Abreu. Really? Wow. I haven't looked at the WC standings in a while. In that case I can understand. If you are remotely close to .500 in the National League, you are still in it -- which makes this travesty of a season seem even worse.
  16. Don't you wish more reporters had the stones to question this after the game. Notice how "after the game" reporters never ask anything that's worth anything. What, you don't think Baker's opinion on Sammy Sosa being left off the top 5 greatest Cubs list is worthwhile? This is serious stuff that we need to know.
  17. Jacque with a pretty good throw for him, it wasn't thrown into the turf and it was only a little bit off line instead of way off line.
  18. good question...my guess is that he's done. Only 103 pitches, dude. He's got another inning or six still left in him.
