Dunn is a true three outcomes sort of guy. I would say he reminds me of Dave Kingman (both are 6'6''), but he obviously has far more plate discipline. In fact, of all of the true three outcome guys I can think of, few have his ability to walk while striking out so much at such a young age. Baseball Reference finds him most comparable at this point to Reggie Jackson, but Reggie was far more athletic. A not too unfavorable comparison to Adam Dunn is Mark McGwire. Both have/had prodigious power along with good plate discipline and both are/were big, strongly built, tall guys. But in the age of steroid testing, I'm not sure Dunn can extend his career in the manner that McGwire did. To me, Adam Dunn does not seem like the kind of guy who would age well -- in other words, he seems to me to have "old man" skills, this despite the fact that he stole 19 bases in his second year of major league baseball and remains an above average base stealer. Given the way he plays defense, his eventual destination will be first base / designated hitter. Still, I would trade for him.
