  1. Glad to see the Farns get pounded. Seriously, this guy was the ultimate tease. He'd dominate for a while, only to completely implode. I know Tim propounds the "Farnsworth was overworked" theory, but I don't buy it. Even if he is pitching in a much lower pressure situation for Detroit (with far fewer opportunities to take advantage of the nightlife), I still say he won't be able to handle being closer.
  2. So how long before Carlos goes off the deep end and decides he needs season ending knee surgery?
  3. Hack Wilson and Gabby Hartnett did it in 1929, while Wilson and Rogers Hornsby accomplished it again 1930. If I had to guess, those were probably the only two Cub teams to accomplish such a feat.
  4. Is Bigbie really a big upside guy? Jody Gerut career (age 27): .267/.338/.440 Larry Bigbie career (age 27): .273/.336/.407 Gerut is actually younger than Bigbie by a month and a half.
  5. Stone has been nothing but complimentary about the Cubs. In fact, he may have been a bit too complimentary, suggesting that Hollandsworth is a potential star player and Macias is a very useful player to have on your roster. He was raving about Wood's performance, BTW. I think much about Stone's criticisms are overplayed in the media. He shows none of the residual bitterness that infects Chip Caray.
  6. If Tom Glavine retires tomorrow, he is an easy "in". One big difference between Glavine and Blyleven is that Blyleven lost 250 games, Glavine only 171. He has a career winning percentage of over .600. Of his contemporaries, only Clemens and Maddux won more games. His ERA+ is superior to a whole lot of pitchers already enshrined. Besides, are there any HOF eligible pitchers who won 20 or more games in a season five times or more who are not in the HOF? IMO, he is an easy first ballot HOFer.
  7. On WGN they are interviewing Henry Blanco. This officially marks the very first and last time Henry Blanco will be interviewed at the end of a ballgame.
  8. Speaking of Gonzo and Bartman, Bill Buckner is slated as an upcoming singer for the 7th inning stretch. I'm sure he can relate to being made the scapegoat. It will be interesting to hear what he has to say.
  9. Ughh. It's like he is watching a different game than everyone else. But I guess in Dusty's reality -- where weakly hit pop-ups are screaming line drives and walks are base clogging rally killers -- he's bound to have a "unique" perspective on things.
  10. I'll take 'Beating a Dead Horse' for $1,000, Alex.
  11. Damn these rookies with their infernal base clogging. Neifi needs to show 'em the way it's done.
  12. If he would have just flipped-flopped Murton and Neifi, I wouldn't be all that upset with this line-up (well, apart from having Neifi in the line-up at all).
  13. It was in anticipation of articles like this that I was happy that Scott Podsednik was voted in as the last man (even if he is a member of the White Sox and doesn't deserve the honor).
  14. Predicted headline in tomorrow's Tribune: Despite Woes, Baker Gets Vote of Confidence. If not tomorrow, I guarantee we will see a headline in this vein in the coming days.
  15. If they are sellers, I hope they trade Burnitz. Given the demand for outfielders, they might be able to get something for him.
  16. Novoa came into the game having allowed 30 baserunners in 14 IP. His ERA was living on borrowed time anyway.
  17. Nice job of Dusty to waste Mike Wuertz in the 8th inning of a 6-0 game. We didn't need him to pitch in the second game anyway.
  18. Cubs win this 4-2. Macias will go 3-5 with a double and earn some starts in the OF.
  19. He can't be considered cheating if he is not in violation of MLB rules. Of course there are the "unwritten rules", but those are shadowy and ambiguous to at best and it's a fine line between what is considered "cheating" and plain 'ol gamesmanship. Remember Derrek Lee complaining about JJ Hardy's deke at SS earlier this year? I thought it was silly of the Cubs to make an issue out of it, and I for one am glad to see one of our players take a bit of initiative. Not that it makes a fig of difference, mind you. Neifi still sucks.
  20. Why would you bunt in that situation? If Neifi sacrifices the runners successfully, then Barrett is likely walked to face Kerry, who is unlikely to score the runner from third, and you have two outs with the bases loaded. Of course, we know Neifi is likely to make an out anyway (which is why he shouldn't be in the line-up), but it's possible he might poke a hit somewhere. The bunt gets you little. *@$%&! Baker ](*,)
  21. This creates another possible competitor in the OF trade market.
  22. Maybe he deserves to get booed. But honestly, I can't be too hard on the guy. It's not like he isn't trying. Newsflash, hitting major league pitching is hard and there have been lots of guys who have had the physical tools to play the game, but who couldn't figure out the strike zone. I don't consider it a moral failing on Corey's part that he appears to be one of those players. The venom against Corey is misplaced. It should be directed at Dusty Baker and the Chicago Cub organization. They are the ones who throw him into the line-up every day and insist on batting him lead-off just because he his fast.
  23. I'm not liking the way this inning is developing. Runners on first and third with nobody out is a good thing, but runners on second and third and one away with Corey at the plate and Neifi on deck does not instill much confidence that they'll get a run out of this. --- And with that said, Corey pops up. *sigh* And Neifi lines out. Dear Jim Hendry: Please fire Dusty.
  24. You know, I find it absolutelty hilarious that "die-hard" White Sox fans have actually dedicated a 58 page thread topic (http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=35436) trying to encourage fellow fans to vote on the Chicago Tribune's "All City Baseball Team", while meanwhile not even getting a single WS player even close to being amongst the American League All Star starters. If that is not the typical White Sox fan in a nutshell, I don't know what is. Oh well, at least they managed to even up the Cubs in the season series. At least for them, they have already won their own personal "World Series". Anyways, I've just submitted a bunch of ballots (25 per) using friends' e-mail addresses (making sure to check off the spam box each and every time). Unfortunately, I now regret all of the previous times that I wrote in Neifi Perez for shortstop.
  25. You might be right. My reaction was purely based on another team's crap being better than our team's crap. Quantrill was pretty damn good through 2001-2003, that was all I needed to know. It never occured to me that Remlinger has pretty awesome peripheal stats (20.7 IP, .235 BAA, 1.11 WHIP, 19/4 K/BB), even despite Dusty's (mis)handling of the bullpen. Still, I would trade away our 39 year old Remmy for either of those two, as it is apparent that Dusty will never use Remlinger in a way that will get the most benefit.
