  1. Hey hey, all these Bears posts are making the Cubs thread bigger, giving people the incorrect impression that this game is interesting. Shame on those ignoring the Cubs while they still reside in the wild card hunt.
  2. I bet they lead both leagues in sac bunts with RISP and two outs in the ninth. I know we have at least one attempt, courtesy of Neifi. Yes, and Hendry should have been fired on the spot for not releasing Neifi or firing Dusty (not sure who deserves the blame) after that abomination.
  3. Touchdown Bears! Brian Griese to Gabe Reid. 17-7. I amend my earlier 49er prediction, the Bears will once again be doing the Super Bowl Shuffle.
  4. You know the answer: clutch hitting (or lack thereof).
  5. I wish. How do they explain most of the 80s and 90s?
  6. The Rockie announcers actually think Jones has struggled? He's pretty much hit to expectations. Maybe they've confused Jacque Jones with Gary Sheffield. Although Jock's numbers would be a hell of a lot better if Dusty came to his senses and sat him against left handers. PS: The 49ers are going all the way this year. 17-0 Niners.
  7. 10-0 49ers on a fumbled snap returned for a TD. Thank goodness it is preseason.
  8. My predicition for the offseason: Dusty gets an extension. Hendry overspends on Juan Pierre. Aramis tests the free agent waters and signs a big money contract. Hendry makes a big splash and signs Carlos Lee to play LF. Hendry signs David Bell to replace Aramis. Hendry signs a veteran starter. The media fawns over Hendry's stellar off-season moves. Outcome: the loss of Aramis nullifies Carlos Lee's contribution. David Bell hits worse than Matt Murton would have in LF, thus the net effect of Lee/Bell vs. Murton/Aramis is a negative. The Cubs are still among the bottom feeders in run scored. The veteran pitcher acquired is basically a mediocore innings eater who combines with the improved performance of some of the young pitchers to give the Cubs a moderate improvement in runs allowed. The Cubs still finish the season with a sizeable run defecit, but finish the season 6-7 games below .500. Jim Hendry pronounces the season a success.
  9. 49ers 3 (got the ball in Bear territory after a Mark Bradley fumble) Bears 0
  10. Come on, we all know that Aramis failed to deliver when Lee went down. Plus he doesn't hustle. Get rid of the bum and bring on David Bell.
  11. Idiot announcers look at batting average and stolen bases and think that Juan Pierre is the greatest thing since sex. That is why Pierre is rumored to be seeking Furcal-type money. And why Hendry will overpay to re-sign him to a multi-year deal.
  12. Speed sure killed the Cubs in the top of the 1st.
  13. White Sox have crappy cell phone named ball park Cubs have Wrigley I would agree to have Wrigley renamed Sprint PCS Ballpark for the next 50 years if it meant a World Series ring.
  14. Not fair. They do give out floppy hats. I have a couple of them.
  15. That is one more than I thought he'd get this year.
  16. It has been noted numerous times that Pagan plays too deep, but nothing has been done about it.
  17. From Tracy Ringolsby: http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/sports_columnists/article/0,1299,DRMN_83_4909894,00.html Boy, wouldn't it be a kick in the teeth if the Cubs gave Pierre a Furcal-like contract? I wouldn't put it past Hendry to throw that type of money in Pierre's direction. I think the whole impetus behind Hendry's desire to re-sign Pierre is to justify the trade in the first place. I get the feeling that Hendry will do anything to "prove" that the Pierre acquisition was a good one, even if it means compounding the original mistake by making an even bigger mistake.
  18. My opinion of Mark Prior is just to let him pitch, make him understand that the Cubs are out of it and that there is no pressure, and tell him to approach the last couple of months of the season as if it were spring training in order to get back where he needs to be. But now, talk of his shoulder? What the hell is going on here? Why is he pitching in the first place? I don't think it is possible to handle two young, injured pitchers any worse than the Cubs have handled Kerry Wood and Mark Prior. It's almost scandalous. I'm just reminded about earlier in the year, prior to opening day, when the rumors of Prior having arm problems first appeared which the Cubs angrily and vociferously denied. I was one of those who doubted Will Carroll's credibility on the issue. Well, shame on me. It's unbelievable how ineptly the Cubs have handled this. This whole organization needs to be flushed.
  19. I was going to say, I think Freel is trying to become this generation's Lenny Dykstra -- on the field and off the field (as his DUI and public intoxication arrests will attest).
  20. I'd also like to point out that while Dusty makes a big deal about Pie's .270 batting average, Hanley Ramirez, Boston's #1 dude, only hit .271 in AA last year at the age of 21, the same age as Pie is now. In fact Pie's numbers in AAA are very similar to Ramirez's last year in AA, with more power and more strike-outs. So if Hanley Ramirez's major league numbers are any guide as to what Pie is capable of doing next year (.267/.337/.427), then he already is an improvement over Juan Pierre. Not that Pie would ever achieve those numbers with this manager and coaching staff in place.
  21. I love when a reporter asks Dusty about playing young players because you can tell he immediately gets all defensive. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-060810cubsbits,1,4347518.story?coll=cs-home-headlines This is rich coming from Dusty. Uh Dusty, I looked it up. Hanley Ramirez never even played in AAA. He shot up straight from AA ball you idiot. Mike Jacobs got 96 at-bats in AAA and hit .177 in 2004. He spent all of last year at AA before being called up. Kill me now.
  22. I read this before actually reading the article and I just about [expletive] myself. Take out the sentence I know one pesky reporter has been after us to start valuing on-base percentage and slugging percentage, but I’ll be looking for guys who have a track record of knocking in a run from third base or stealing a bag and for guys who can catch the ball (even Hendry knows better to admit it in public) and that's pretty much the script Hendry will read from if/when he announces Dusty's extension. I'm still holding out hope for the cheeseburger.
  23. Dusty pulled all the right levers, the team just didn't respond. Oh well, we'll get 'em next time.
