  1. Don't forget the called strike on the supposed swing by DeRosa when he was just trying to get out of the way. Well, they are the Cubs.
  2. Even you look better when you have a 2-0 count!
  3. They are not trying to make him a slap hitter, just a quicker to the ball swing and keeping it shorter and to the point. I think his HR shows a lot of built up frustration and I hope he learns to be able to keep his emotions in check and not have such highs and lows. Don't get me wrong, I love seeing him pumped but it just makes me wonder who beaten mentally he may have been until then. It's hard not getting down on yourself when you struggle but as long as he continues to do the right thing and stays focused, he'll be fine.
  4. I think it depends on how his arm feels and how it recovers from the inning. By the way, I've heard through the grapevine that your editor is trying to find out who Spiderman is, is this true?
  5. Effectively the Cubs did nothing. At least not yet. They haven't actually prevented vendors from continuing to sell the t-shirts and they don't care if you wear them inside the ballpark. And it's not just one t-shirt. There are several t-shirts and one of the headbands says it, as well. Yikes, that ain't good.
  6. I was listening to an SU football game over the radio about 15 years or so ago. They had a new car dealer speaking in a mock Japanese lingo and it was way over the top. My wife and I looked at each other and we could not believe that this was even allowed and the spot was shown at least 5 times during the game.
  7. Stealing bases slightly above average....getting a jump on a fly ball, below average.
  8. I'm glad the Cubs squashed this quickly because if they didn't you could forget any other Asian players from coming to Chicago.
  9. I think I just saw a notice on the ESPN crawl line that the game will be shown in all markets, including New York and Chicago. Nice, thanks.
  10. I think because he's seeing the ball well he's going to get more pitchers nibbling but if he does go into a slump, which is probable, pitchers will challenge him a lot more and the walks will drop imo. I'd love to see him keep up a solid isod in a slump.
  11. While we were in Pittsburgh you insisted that Corey Patterson (.323/.353/.839/1.192 at the time) had finally "figured it out", and was beginning that magical break out year that everyone talks about. In the meantime, Corey's gone 1 for 28, including 0 for Chicago, and dropped that line to .200/.274/.509/.783. Hell, he hasn't had a hit in 9 days ! Not gonna draw the logical conclusion here...... leaving it to you. Nothing like kicking a man when he's drunk. Hmmm.... I was thinking of it more as firm nudge than a kick. Oh, well. It was a nudge until you started cussing like a sailor! Corey still has a decent isod during that slump which is pretty good for him. Usually when he flatlines, he takes it to the nth division. I throw 1 little "Hell" out there, and now I'm "cussing like a sailor" ???? http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b137/Hornkohl/Hyperbole.jpg This is a no hyperbole zone!
  12. Sam will always be in a lose, lose even bigger scenario. He's going to have to prove he didn't do roids, show documentation of his workout schedule and then he might be considered clean but the chances are he never will be able to do so.
  13. Just like the old man was when he was younger, it's deja vous all over again.
  14. I'm wondering how long people want Pie to play before he could rightfully be pulled from the lineup. 200 more at bats? 400 at bats? A full season? Two seasons? Giving a player a day off to rest has a clear benefit. Playing Pie in the hopes that he'll be better come August is something that doesn't have a guaranteed payoff. I totally understand the need to find at bats for Felix. But his swing looks terrible right now. It sounds like Lou is working really hard with him on the side to get it shortened up. I support giving a player at bats to figure things out approach-wise. But I don't think it helps much to give him game at bats to try and fix his mechanics. If anything, he'll revert to poor mechanics because it's comfortable and he's trying to get a hit. I'm actually not entirely against what Lou is doing right now. I'd be more aggressive in getting him at bats in favorable situations, but I can completely understand the approach he's taking. In my opinion, Lou is protecting Pie while he makes some mechanical adjustments, which is fine. However, at some point, Pie has to get game action to develop. In addition to the swing mechanics, Felix clearly still needs to work on reading and reacting to quality pitches at the major league level. He's not going to be able to work on that aspect in bp and has to get in the games to develop that aspect of his game. There will be some growing pains, no doubt. But the payoff with Pie, while not certain, should be more than what we'll get long-term from having Reed playing full-time. The nice thing about Reed playing well is that it stops (hopefully) the Cubs from dealing for a CF.
  15. That was fun. I remember when the Quebec Nords and the Canadians went right at it during the opening faceoff. God, they hated each other.

  17. They are seeing the ball well but that will change because they won't be able to keep this up, not at this pace. It's when they are struggling is when the pitching staff has to pick it up and you get key walks/hits out of different hitters until they heat up again. I'd like to see Lee get hot, cool a little and then ARam takes off. When they are both hitting like this it worries me because they will cool and somebody else is going to have to make up the slack.
  18. Who says they have given up on him? The comments from Lou and the extra work he is putting in with Pie himself suggests otherwise. The Cubs have given up on Pie and hate Murton, haven't you been reading?
  19. Lee and 1.133 OPS wants a word with you. There is no question that Fukudome, DeRosa, and Soto are all hitting above expectations, but Ramirez is not slouching with his .915 OPS either. It's a bit insane right now. The Cubs have 5 names with over .900 OPS, all in the top 40 OPS for all of MLB (6 names in top 26 for the NL). Most amazing though is the percentage contribution coming from walks, which is a new thing for this team. 81 walks in 18 games, are you kidding me? You see the ball well, you hit the ball hard or walk and it's been a pleasure to watch. I wish Lou and Perry were with the Cubs in 2003.

  21. As well as Lee has been hitting, he probably figured Derrek would put the bat on the ball. I don't particularly care what Lou's rationale is. This team is better off if we never attempt a hit and run all season. Lou really needs to stop calling for a few each game. With an ump using a tight strike zone and pitchers throwing so many balls it's foolish to hit and run. You don't really need that qualifier at the beginning, IMO. It's a good strategy if used correctly. There is never a good time for a hit and run. Now if you want to change it to Earl Weaver's run and hit, you might have a case. That's what I do.

  23. I'm sure Sullivan will compare him to a bad Japanese player if he stays in the slump.

  25. You know what that makes him? A lillygagger. What a bunch of Lillygaggers!
