  1. While it's great they're showing their disapproval for management, I highly doubt it has any real impact! Link to Article By the way, is "Bob Walk Bobblehead Night" really a fan draw?!?!?!? No wonder no one shows up for the games!!
  2. I think I'd wait to see how Marshall does tomorrow. A strong outing by him and some good offense by the Cubs bats may make it a moot point. If Marshall can go 7, I think they should be able to finish off the game with the pen without taxing it. Marmol and Howry could pitch tomorrow if needed. And since they all were off on Thursday, I'd even say Petrick and Wuertz could go if needed. The key will be Marshall because the way Marquis has been pitching, they'll likely go to the pen early on Sunday.
  3. Sheets started his career 5-0 against the Cubs. He has since gone 2-7 and is 3-4 overall at Wrigley. His Wrigley ERA is in the 4's, I believe. They can beat him tomorrow. But they'll need to keep the Brewers offense down, as well!
  4. I saw today an article in one of the very small local papers that he put his home up for sale here in Chicago. Apparently, it's a pretty small home, very old (100+ years) and only about 1500 square feet. Of course, he still has the 7500 square foot home outside of Phoenix. I can't decide if the Cubs should just completely cut ties with him, or if they should try to get him to sign another low contract. I would love to see him be able to contribute for the Cubs one day. Pipe dream, maybe.
  5. I learned my lesson about posting "in game" back in '94. I had Tuffy Rhodes roaming the Wrigley outfield for at least a decade!!
  6. "Is he for real" and "Is this the real Fontenot" have two completly different meanings. I don't think anyone believes this is the real Fontenot batt near or over .400. However, I think Fontenot can be for real in a sense that he can be a very solid MLB player. Just my interpretation.
  7. Did you ever consider some of the posters here don't get on daily or even weekly to know this was discussed a while back? And with as much volume there is on this board, it's rather difficult to read several pages of topics with many threads approaching 100 or more entries. You certainly weren't required to read this thread or even post a reply for that matter. But thanks for the input.
  8. Actually, their attitudes didn't change that much. Instead of saying they were wrong and the umps were right, Hawk when on a tirade about how Ed Rapuano should've immediately called the play dead at the time of the obstruction. He harped about this over and over. He even mention the supervisory ump (Garcia?) sending a note to the press box stating the play should of been called dead at the time of the obstruction. Again wrong! Hey Hawk - Strike Two!!!!!
  9. I personally won't get to excited about anything the Cubs do until the reach .500 . Doesn't matter what trades they make or how many games out they are right now. No team has ever made the playoffs without being better than .500. The Cardinals were close last year, but they were still over the even mark. And while they just swept the Sox, the Sox are getting beaten by everyone. And Cubs are just as capable of getting swept by the next team they play. After all, they just lost a series at home to the Pdres and then lost a series to the lowly Rangers. So until they're at .500 or better, I won't even dream of any playoff chance!!
  10. By the way, on the WGN telecast, Len and Bob are much calmer, immediately point out the obstruction as it happening in real time and the replays show not only the 2nd base ump pointing out the obstruction, but the 3rd base ump as well!!! God I love listening to the crotchety, crabby, irritated Hawkeroo when the Sox are losing!!!!! :D
  11. "Dag-gum right the games gonna be played under protest!"
  12. I love the "high and mighty" DJ saying he and Hawk see the whole field and the umps only see what's in front of them. Then they both state several times how the umps must have missed something. DJ even goes so far to say that one of the umps "too his eye off his responsibility" and missed the call. The DJ then says they saw the replays enough times to know "exactly what took place". Fast forward to the bottom of the inning after the commercial break and those two morons say they were watching the ball in right field and not the runners on base, and that's why they didn't see the umps make the interference call. Laughable jackasses!!!!
  13. Actually, the rule is not quite simple. Baseball is a very complicated game with many rules, sub-rules, etc. That's why the umps are full-time employees, working 12 months a year on rules, interpretation etc. And that is why the are more often than not correct in their calls WITHOUT the aid of instant replay!
  14. I don't believe the ball becaomes automatically dead. Her's the partial rule I found: "Type B obstruction occurs when the obstructed runner is not being played upon. The ball does not become dead; rather, the umpire calls "That's obstruction!", but play is allowed to continue. While play continues, the umpire privately decides what base the obstructed runner would have reached without the obstruction. The obstructed runner is now "protected" until he reaches that base. When playing action stops, the ball will become dead and the runner will be awarded that base if he has not reached it. If he was put out before he reaches that base, that out will be nullified and he will be awarded that base. If the runner reaches that base safely, the obstruction is ignored. If the runner continues past that base, he does so at his own risk, without protection. There is no minimum base award for type B obstruction."
  15. That's why I'm advocating a trade to Atlanta. I don't think the Braves will re-sign him which at least gives the Cubs a shot at him. If we send him to the Mets or Angels, I'm fairly certain they'd ink him to a long-term deal. Didn't Ponson do that with the O's? If the Cubs are out of it at the break, I'd have a nice sit down with Z and let him know they're going to trade him, but want to sign him back in the offseason. I wonder if Z would be game for that? Is this legal, or is it considered some sort of tampering or something. And I believe you're right. Ponson did get traded and then re-signed with theO's. Of course, he sucked big time that first season and had legal troubles back in Curacao or wherever he's from. Anyway, I'd consider the "trade and re-sign" if the Cubs fall to far out.
  16. I love listening to Hawk when the Sox are losing. He (and DJ) both stated emphatically the call was BS and one of the worse they'd ever seen in there's years of baseball. Then when they came back from commercials, Hawk never really said the umps got the play right. Rather, he went on a diatribe about how Ed Rapuano (the ump) got the call wrong by not calling the play dead right away. The fact is, if the interference doesn't involve a play on the runner, the play continues. Hawk is just a mean, old man! i love it!!

  18. After watching the craziness in the 9th inning of the Cubs game, I'm still not certain if the game was protested or not. Regardless, I'm wondering how protests affect the outcome of a game. Suppose the umps made the wrong call in the 9th, but failed to score a run and still ended up beating the Sox 2-0. If the Sox protest was validated by the league, what happens? Do the Cubs lose the game? What if an incorrect ruling by the umps directly affected the outcome? Thanks in advance to those in the know!
  19. I'm not suggesting trading DLee. I just don't think the Cubs have much veteran talent to get them youthful talent.
  20. I don't know how many years he has left on his deal, but compared to Soriano and Rammy, isn't he a bit underpaid? He'll command a ton down the road. He's about the only player on the team that would net young talent. I'd hate to see him go, and they really have no viable replacement. But if the Cubs want to make some trades and get any real value in return, who's expendable?? Doesn't look like they have much other than some of their own young (and mostly unproven) talent.
  21. I know this would never happen, but..... ...what about trading him for some solid talent and then (wink, wink)re-signing him to the big FA contract. The Cubs still get Z as their ace and improve the team dramatically with some young talent and/or prospects. There's no guarantee a team that picks him up in a trade is gonna be able to sign him.
  22. Maybe the Cubs are in the process of making a trade for a fifth starter. Maybe Guzman to the pen is in effort to groom him as a closer.
  23. Good call. They tried to give a few of those games away, though. Hope they keep rolling when the competition gets tougher.
