I really believe that some of what the White Sox do is to countered the Cubs, even if in the long-term it's not necessarily beneficial for the organization. The need to stay relevant in the Chicago media, they need to stay relevant with their fans. And that's why I think the Sox will never consider tearing things down and starting over. They can't do that or they'll lose the fan base and the city. And it's not just on-field personnel moves the club makes. I think hiring Ventura was purely to resonate with the fan base, get 'em excited, get 'em to come out to park. Even though Ventura never coached before and hasn't been exactly stellar during his stint. Another example is the club's whole marketing approach to last season. Knowing the Cubs' farm system was loaded and highly thought of nationally, the White Sox created this whole "look at our kids/look at our youngsters" rally point. Hawk would constantly tout it on air, and there were plenty of commercials (radio and TV) saying the exact same thing. But who exactly were their youngsters outside of a couple of pitchers??? There 27 year old Cuban rookie?? Or the 27 year old C or 3rd baseman?? The 33 (yeah, right) year old SS ?? Maybe it's the below average Left Fielder or unproven Right Fielder?? Paulie?? Again, who are all these youngsters they're promoting. Phegley sucked. Semien sucked. Davidson sucked. Most of the young pitchers not named Sale and Quintana have sucked. And they really had nobody ion the minors making much noise save Rodon. I firmly believe much of what the White Sox do is to counter the Cubs. And when the Cubs suck (which is often) things are easy. But when the Cubs have things going, the Sox need to counter, try to grab the spotlight....even at the expense of the organization sometimes.
