  1. Sorry but overall this season Young deserves it. I guess that means a Padres board has started a Punch Derrek Lee campaign. :?: :?: :?: Let me explain. You see, there was this game between the Cubs and the Padres, and Derrek Lee (he plays for the Cubs) was batting against Chris Young. Mr. Young hit Mr. Lee with a pitch, and Mr. Lee took umbrage with Mr. Young. Mister Young said something not nice to Mr. Lee, and Mr. Lee attempted to punch Mr. Young. At that point, Mr. Young tried to Punch Derrek Lee.
  2. Which again begs the question, "How is that incurring more debt for the new owner when we have to pay him if we keep him?" Evidently, if they trade him and pay his salary (or, ostensibly, DhimFA), all the money due him must be taken up immediately for accounting purposes. Something to do with having a liability (Jones salary), but no corresponding asset (Jones' services - no jokes, please). From an accounting standpoint the fact that no one is willing to take Jones unless the Cubs pick up most of his remaining contract means that the asset is impaired and they need to take a charge in the current period (with corresponding liability) whether they trade him or not.
  3. Thank you all for this highly entertaining thread. While several pushed the envelope of forum ettiquette, I think it was mostly in a good-natured way. I tend to agree that we could have an alternate name having a little fun with us here, but it made me laugh. I especially liked Vance calling the post an idiot. Carry on, mates.
  4. I've been involved in a few acquisitions and, generally, the purchase agreements state that the current mangement will continue business as usual - if that involves signing contracts, acquiring or selling assets, etc. Then after this general provision, there will be certain trigger levels that would require consultation/approval fromm the buyer. Even then, though, if the proposed transaction in excess of the trigger levels is seen to be beneficial to the business the approval will be granted. What they're looking to avoid is current management selling an asset worth $10 million to a brother-in-law for $1 million, or buying an asset worth $1 million and paying $10 million. But if you have an asset you paid $10 million for that is now worth only $1 million (say a pallet full of first generation Ipods or Jacque Jones's contract) selling that for $1 million generally wouldn't be a problem. On the other hand, if the buyer thinks current management doesn't have a clue and making any decisions with long term consequences is going to reduce the value of the business, then the answer will generally be no.
  5. Good gosh almighty he was almost as bad as DeRosa in 2004. And DeRo has clearly shown it's impossible to improve. Ever a bum, always a bum.
  6. About damn time! On the other hand, Barrett's got 32 PA's with SD without a walk.
  7. It's not the equivalent of purchasing prospects because every penny the Cubs were paying the Marlins would have to go to Jones. Not a cent would go to the team with less financial resources. It's a recognition that the market values the services of Jacque Jones at the league minimum. If Jones couldn't perform at least up to the standard of a league minimum player (plus the value of the prospect) this would be a bad deal for Florida - they could get better performance by paying league minimum to a league minimum player instead.
  8. You can always follow the Mesa Cubs game Link Cubs are up 1-0 after 2. Edit - Ryan Harvey sighting!
  9. In Marquis' 17 starts this year............. Team record by starting shortstop CUBS are 5-5 when Izturis starts at ss CUBS are 5-1 when Theriot starts at ss CUBS are 1-0 when Cedeno starts at ss Who got all of the rest of the starts at shortsop? That's only 17 games. Fontenot only started at ss twice (as far as I can remember) and I can't recall Derosa ever starting at ss. Those were just the 17 games that Marquis started.
  10. Julio Franco Clemens Maddux Moyer Sammy I know, Sammy's a little inexperienced for this team...
  11. Sorry to be picky here, but I think the word you're looking for is omniscient. If Bruce was even close to omnipotent I think the Cubs would look a little better.
  12. BTW, went back to the DeRosa signing thread. Looks like Truffle was the biggest DeRosa defender, with Serena/Laura supporting. And a certain Cub Fan from Jersey thought we grossly overpaid.
  13. If I had to guess it's because Vance got to see a lot of DeRosa with the rangers last year. He was just as much fun to watch then.
  14. Southern League Announcement
  15. You're not being serious are you? Do you seriously think there's a serious likelihood that Tomy23 is serious?
  16. If you have premium you can turn off images (highly recommended at work). If you don't have premium, get it!
  17. quoting a "national league" source. I guess thats an improvement. Better than little league I guess
  18. An equally valid but probably more descriptive phrasing would be "Several readers claim to have heard reports to the same effect by Hank Goldberg of 560 WQAM out of Miami
  19. That's none of our business. :-k Put your mind in the gutter first, then re-read the original quote and goony's response. Oh, I got it, I just couldn't decide which smiley to use. I have vague memories of the gutter.
  20. Thanks for the eloquent explanation - I forgot some people haven't seen the premium light yet.
  21. That was from before he signed with Texas and announced he wanted to return. Well, if we can get 25 players of whom it can be said: I don't see the downside. Am I missing something?
  22. There's a 48 hour window for all trade talk, this deal went down Wednesday morning so any and all discussion revolving around the deal must cease and desist ASAP. Does that mean we can't bitch about the Pierre trade anymore?
  23. is it entirely out of the question that sammy came back because he had something to prove, and he genuinely likes playing baseball? I think it is absolutely possible, but there will always be people (not suggesting Derwood necessarily) who look to denigrate the motives of other people. As a local in the Rangers market I can say that Sammy has been pretty much the model teammate this year. It was also interesting to hear interviews with both Sammy and his wife speaking very highly of Chicago and the Cubs organization. If there was any bitterness it appears that Sammy. at least, has moved on. His manager's comments:
