    I'm not saying I'm content with their lack of success. I'm saying look at this team now. There are studs all over the field compared to the crap that used to take the field. I don't blame hendry for any of this. The buck stops at the desk of Dusty Baker. He's had the players all along. Every year this team gets better and he finds a way to burn them out and get the least out of them. Think about the group of misfits who won the wild card in '98. Led by Morandini, Gaetti, Henry Rodriquez and Hernandez (and of course Sosa) and a rag tag bunch of arms the Cubs had more success than this team with an enormous amount of talent. Put Bobby Cox in charge of these guys and you're not complaining about finishing 4th in the Central. It's on Baker, not Hendry. hendry hired baker. hendry could've fired baker. hendry has wasted money on garbage like neifi perez and scott eyre. hendry is the one pursuing juan pierre and jock jones instead of brad wilkerson and brian giles. sorry, hendry gets a lot of the blame too.

    the cubs should have their attention focused on signing brian giles or trading for a guy like abreu, trading for wilkerson, and letting cedeno start at short and leaving walker at second. signing furcal to a contract like that will be a horrible, horrible move for the chicago cubs. if the cubs have money burning a hole in their pocket, then spend it on pitching. furcal is not worth it. i'd be happy with this lineup: CF Wilkerson 2B Walker 1B Lee RF Giles 3B Ramirez C Barrett LF Murton SS Cedeno go out and look at a guy like millwood. go out and look for relief pitching. furcal will be a black hole in a couple years if they pay him anywhere close to what he's asking for.

    i think wilkerson is a far better option than pierre, and frankly, might be the best option out there for the cubs to play CF. pierre's speed is nice, but unless he gets on base, his speed is useless. wilkerson can GET ON BASE. that's what he does, and historically, he's had power. i don't know where that power went last year, but i'd be willing to bet you that wilkerson hits more than 11 HRs in 2006. ensberg lost his power stroke two years ago, and look at the monster year he put up last year. the cubs' biggest problem is OBP. pierre might address that problem, but only if he hits for a high average. if he has a year like last year, he's an average player at best. wilkerson is going to get on base. i believe vance said it earlier: he knows how to take a walk. that is what the cubs need at the top of the order. believe it or not, baserunning and defense were not the reason the cubs sucked last year, it was because our pitching staff walked everybody and our position players never walked. if our lineup had any semblance of patience, you'd see derrek lee with the mvp trophy today. the cubs can only do so much this offseason. i'm not a huge juan pierre fan, but i guess he (potentially) could be an improvement. wilkerson IS an improvement. go get him, jim.

    maybe this deal not going down is a blessing in disguise, and it will let us pry Wilkerson from the Nationals.

    wow. i wasn't that excited about furcal to begin with, and if this is even CLOSE to what it's going to take to get him signed, then it isn't worth it.

    if i was voting today, i'd vote like this: NL MVP - Derrek Lee NL CY - Roger Clemens AL MVP - Alex Rodriguez AL CY - Johan Santana honestly though, the NL races are almost too close to call. i think A-Rod and Santana are the clear favorites in the AL, however
