  1. Poor defender? Do you know who Pierre is or are you thinking of another player? He covers a great deal of ground in CF, in case you haven't seen him play before. Just because he doesn't have a great arm doesn't make him a poor defender. Also, to those that compare him to Hairston there is one big difference. Pierre has actual hit well over the course of an entire year (200+ hits 3 of last 4 years). Hairston is nothing more than a part time player. Sometimes I think some people are a little over optimistic projecting how good "such and such" is going to be, just because they are young. Hairston could only hope that he could put up Pierre like numbers over the course of a year. players that hit for high average with no patience and no power are not complete players. i'm sorry, but unless you're a player like ichiro, you need to walk. pierre does not walk. his high obp is directly tied to his high batting average, and in a year like this, when he's not hitting anything, he becomes completely worthless. throw in the fact that he has no power to speak of, and you have a big liability on your hands. sure, he's great if he's hitting .320, but if you think juan pierre is capable of consistently getting 200 hits a year, you're out of your mind. if he had patience and power, he could still have a down year and be somewhat valuable to a team. there are FAR better options for the chicago cubs than juan pierre. there's no way he's coming here anyway because of pie, but still, i completely loathe the idea of getting him.
  2. no it won't. i'd take pie or patterson any day of the week over pierre. although i think pie isn't ready for the bigs, you're crazy if you think he's got three years left in the minors. he'll be called up in august at the latest, and i wouldn't be surprised if he makes the team out of spring training next year. i challenge you to find one thing juan pierre does that corey can't do better (besides bunting, because who cares about bunting). corey is capable of hitting for at least the same average as pierre, and if he had a different approach, there's no doubt in my mind he could get on base as much as pierre does. he also plays much better defense, and is much better at stealing bases. keep juan pierre away from this team.
  3. ARGH I HATE ADAM DUNN HE STRIKES OUT TOO MUCH AND NEVER HITS SAC FLIES
  4. i'd say a big no griffey and his $10+ million contract, and an even bigger no to rich aurilia. ronny cedeno > rich aurilia.
  5. i wouldn't trade patterson for pierre.
  6. there's no way milwaukee is trading carlos lee to anybody, let alone the chicago cubs Plus, Carlos Lee isn't really that good. He's barely better than Jeromy Burnitz this year....and that's with Lee having a huge power year (ISOP nearly 40 points higher than recent years of his career). Take out Lee's already career high 6 intentional walks and his below average .334 OBP for a middle of the order hitter is even worse. although i do think carlos lee has been a bit overrated this year, i think he's been significantly better than burnitz. he's slugging about 50 points higher, and i think that for the most part, their OB% has been around the same mark the majority of the season.
  7. skip bayless is an idiot whose columns deliberately fly in the face of popular opinion to get a rise out of people. this article is a complete joke.
  8. there's no way milwaukee is trading carlos lee to anybody, let alone the chicago cubs
  9. i think the cubs would be silly to go after either wagner or guardado. they're going to command far too great a cost for being a short-term rental. also, there is no way the cubs would use either of those guys as set-up men instead of closers, and dempster has done a very nice job so far. he isn't the problem. get some solid middle relief help, and let somebody else get guardado or wagner.
  10. i've gone to seven cubs games this year, only once did i have a ticket before i arrived at wrigley. if you want bleacher seats, be prepared to shop around. those typically go for 40 bucks, but depending on the opponent, can be had for as low as 30. if you don't feel like making a drunken fool of yourself, check out the scalper near wrigleyville sports for bleacher seats in the family section. those are dirt cheap, only 20 bucks. if you're not worried about your seats, you should have no problem getting them at face value. just be patient and shop around! i can't stress this enough. good luck, you despicable pirates fan you.
  11. awesome Is Dunn the perfect hitter or something? He's a whiff machine, and I agree with what the Wiz said - good pitching can dominate strikeout prone guys and you'll find good pitching in the playoffs. Has Dunn ever been in seriously clutch situation with the Reds? Hardly. Skepticism of a lifetime sub-.250 hitter's chances in the playoffs seems pretty logical to me. All I'm saying is that Dunn would probably put up his normal numbers in "clutch situations". And his normal numbers are awesome. You see Dunn as a sub-.250 hitter. Fine. I see a guy with a .382 career OBP and .512 SLG. But I guess batting average wins. I see Dunn as a sub .250 hitter cuz that's what he is - that's reality. I remember slugger Andre Dawson not doing well in the '89 playoffs - maybe Dunn will be the new Mr. October, but it's natural to have reservations... as I have no unholy man-love for him. dunn has been one of the most productive players in the NL the last couple of years - that's reality. also, here is a picture of my adam dunn jersey shirt, conveniently sized to be your new desktop wallpaper! http://img328.imageshack.us/img328/347/img02009vb.th.jpg
  12. the cubs have to be the flakiest team in the major leagues. they have looked beyond great during this five game winning streak, but looked unbelievably awful during the losing streak. remember how terrible they looked before prior went down against the rockies? then, just like that, they started playing like a team that was a contender. i'd like to get my hopes up again and say that the cubs are going to start their run at the wild card right now, but i can't be sure with such a schizophrenic team.
  13. this thread is going places
  14. at first glance, leiter had a GREAT year last year. but then it dawned on me that any senior citizen pitcher who walks 5 batters per 9 innings and has a BABIP of .240 is bound to implode
  15. At first glance, I thought the same thing, but something tells me that the Braves are going to have a very difficult 2nd half. Call it a hunch... i'll bet you a million invisible dollars that washington is not in first place by august 14
  16. that's super cool. thanks a lot for pointing this out.
  17. in response to your sig, if rey ordonez was hitting .300/.400/.500 against the cardinals, would you sign him?
  18. oops, my bad. i meant to say any player in the cubs' system.
  19. i'm so tired of this utterly ridiculous argument. to the guy who said they'd take podsednik or pierre over dunn: are you out of your mind? this makes no sense whatsoever. dunn's OBP is .384, which is 19 points higher than podsednik's, and 74 points higher than pierre's. you know what? i could care less about dunn's batting average. dunn's ability to draw walks completely negates his batting average, because even if he's hitting .240 he's still getting on base more than almost anyone in the national league. 38% OF THE TIME ADAM DUNN COMES TO THE PLATE HE DOES NOT MAKE AN OUT. i don't know how much clearer i could make it. let's move on to the strikeout argument. who cares? A STRIKEOUT IS JUST ANOTHER OUT. no one is complaining about the cubs striking out this year, probably because they're in the bottom half of the NL in strikeouts. they could be in the top for all i care, it still doesn't change the fact that no one on the cubs knows how to draw walks and the cubs are close to last in the NL in OBP. of course, dunn helps solve those two problems immediately. ok ok ok, so maybe once every two weeks dunn fails to move a runner over to third base. maybe he fails to drive a guy in with a sacrifice fly. BUT ALONG WITH THESE SHORTCOMINGS HE HITS 50 HOME RUNS. right how he's slugging .550, with an OPS of .935. aramis last year had an OPS of .951. huff has never had an OPS that high. carlos beltran has never had an OPS that high. and you know what? ADAM DUNN IS ONLY 25 YEARS OLD. also, i would like to throw these numbers out to you guys: .300/.417/.611 1.028 OPS 8 HR 21 RBI 19 R 27 H those are adam dunn's stats at wrigley field (90 ABs) in the last three years. why wouldn't dunn's numbers improve after being traded to the cubs? he clearly has success at wrigley, he's getting out of a horrible situation in cincy, and he's finally playing on an (alleged) contender. this is why i will be furious if the cubs let the astros or dodgers pry him away from cincy. i said it in the other thread: right now i would trade pie for him. i don't think there's a player in the cubs' system that i wouldn't trade for dunn. he's one of the few guys you trade anything for, right up there with abreu. first of all, i think pie is slightly overrated by this board, and i think if the cubs bring him up it will be a mistake. he needs to develop more, and work on his patience and his ability to steal bases. he's got all the talent in the world, but will he ever be the player dunn is? i don't know. it's possible, but unlikely. if we could, i'd love to keep pie and let him develop and be an all-star caliber CF. but if that's the one thing the reds want, then i think we should pull the trigger. i'll trade a potential all-star for a player who has been one of the most productive players in the game the last couple of years any day of the week. i think if you can trade for a player of dunn's caliber, you do it. dunn is one of the most underrated players in the game, just because people don't understand how valuable he is to an offense. it's a fact. you can argue with me all you want about whether it's worth trading pie for him, and trust me, i can understand that argument. but don't waste your time saying that dunn isn't productive, because it's a fact that he is. look it up. i wish there was a giant book of baseball that had such facts, some kind of infallible bible type book that had such truths. argh. some people think bush is a good president, some people think the world is flat, and others think adam dunn sucks 'cause he strikes out too much and plays crappy defense. it's one of those things, i guess.
  20. i'd take him too. i just don't understand why the nationals would trade either one of these guys, or why in the world they would want preston wilson. oh well.
  21. berkman and dunn in the same outfield, good lord will i pissed if this happens
  22. please god no no no no no i just got a dunn jersey shirt for god's sake
  23. i would trade corey for wilkerson so fast... i mean, it's not even a question. i don't think bowden would be able to get past the "wilk-" syllable in his name before i'd yell "OMG DONE NO TRADEBACKS!" and hang up my phone. i love wilkerson, he's a moneyball-type player who does a lot of other things right. he's got speed, good D, and he gets on base lots. i don't think there's any possibility that bowden could be that stupid, but who knows.
