Since Russell will hit FA quite a bit younger, and since he received a $2.6M signing bonus, there isn't quite the same urgency for him to jump. And based on the year he had last year, I don't think there's quite the same urgency for the Cubs to offer him such an extension. Now, if he has a 4WAR season this year, the Cubs calculus might change, but Russell's is less likely to sign if he thinks he can sustain it. $2.6M doesn’t go very far with all the child support payments he has.
