    yeah sure fine I still wanted more dammit Marginal improvement is still important. If the playoffs are a "crapshoot", it's best to tilt the odds in their favor. The problem is marginal improvement doesn't translate into marginal financial gains. "We're good/great" isn't a justification for not getting better. But (maybe?) its justification for waiting until the deadline to see which needs rise to the surface. Admittedly, this does not at all fit the narrative that every game is important. It's probably just me shifting my (false?) hopes for improvement to the trade deadline.

    Unpopular Opinion (or not, I dunno): The way this team is playing validates Theo's perceived inactivity this offseason. I really think this team is this good and now (hopefully) has the flexibility to add at the deadline or pick up Kimbrell after the draft.

    We'll see. He could end up like Miguel Cabrera, or he could end up like Pablo Sandoval. so either an elite hall of fame career or a good career I would say this is accurate on both (both that Pablo Sandoval had a merely but clearly good career and that that is Jr's floor.)

    This is all about Zobrist wanting to see Bote get a chance over Russell. I've heard Zobrist is not at all happy that Russell has been welcomed back.

    While I don’t agree with your overall argument, this point kind of makes the discussion irrelevant and your argument functionally true. What? How? Joe Maddon making a decision doesn’t make it the right decision. And if you can pull an above average defender for a better defender late it doesn’t make the above average defender below average. His argument is demonstrably wrong. Demonstrably wrong but functionally true if Maddon uses him in ways that minimize his defensive contributions, like DHing him and removing him late in close games. I definitely overstated the point, but he contributes less defensively if he’s not allowed to contribute defensively,

    This just makes me wish Creed was the manager instead of Joe. Only if Pam is there to make sure he doesn't do anything stupid. I think the real answer is to find a Pam for Joe.

    The icing on this poop cake will be when Russell is lauded as having "saved the season" as the Cubs inevitably turn it around some time in the next 20 games. "Cubs' record before Addison Russell return: 11-17 After: 41-26" or some such graphic around the all-star break.

    Because there's selection bias in those splits. He doesn't see very many left handed hitters, and the few that he does see are guys like Rizzo who are going to skew the stats. That's the idea, anyway. It's certainly possible he jut has reverse splits, but I'm way to lazy to do any real digging into this. That's true, but I feel that Schwarber is a guy like Rizzo, where as Zagunis is not a guy like Rizzo. Schwarber is not a “guy” like Rizzo. Zagunis is not a lefty. Your words are broken.

    Add Russell, keep Zobrist, lose Zag and Bote. That’s your normal lineup vs lefties. Oh and apparently bat the pitcher 8th.

    First, I almost forgot this thread is about the Hendrix extension. With that in mind, I would like to say this is not the time to extend Baez. Second, I feel like Javy is likely to injure himself with his 125% play at some point in the next few years, unless is actually freezing and unfreezing time. Actually, the more I think about it, the simplest answer is that he is freezing and unfreezing time and that somewhere his parents are insisting that he not do his best so as not to arouse suspicions, ala dash of the incredibles.
